Subject: Great Plains Turbomax "issue"

Scottville, 49454 Northwest Michigan

We bought a new Great Plains Turbomax about this time last year.  We ran it over a 100 acres of corn stalks last fall, and it's done about 2200 acres of field work this year.

We're surprised how much the coulters have worn.

We had a couple break.  We bought two new ones to replace the broken ones.  There's an inch-and-a-quarter difference diameter between the new ones and the worn coulters.  This was off of the front gang.  Perhaps the rear gang hasn't experienced as much wear.  Will measure the wear on the rear gang sometime today.

Have other Turbomax owners experienced this much wear?  Is there a better alternative of coulter to use instead of the originals?

thanks for your replies, gordon

Yours is not set up correctly. Ive got over 3500 acres on ours and blades are way better shape than that.

We primarily only run 6 degrees unless finishing behind our disk. Then its on 0.

What size is the machine? What type of soil do you have? What angle are you running? CFC Distributers has a replacement blade called a Vortex blade that many have used and had luck with. I believe Ingersoll makes a replacement as well.

Very good questions.  I should have given that information in my post.

It's a 30 foot Turbomax.  Most of our soils are a clay loam.  We ran the Turbomax primarily with the maximum angle.

We have one farm, 340 acres, with some timber soil that has litter sand, it melts wear items.old timers changed plow shares at least twice a day when dry. Can probably do 10 times the acres with less wear.

One other thing to consider.... And this came from an equipment rep I spoke to one time. In the worst conditions meaning soil types.... figure 150 acres per foot of machine maybe 200 if you are really lucky. Something I always consider when purchasing equipment. Alot of these VT machines work well but don't allow for much wear on the blades compared to a reg disc. Which I think catches many people by surprise considering the expense of replacement......
