Subject: Caterpillar D5M Dozer Electrical Question

West Tennessee

We have a service code (transmission output speed sensor) coming up intermittently. I have the service manual and diagnosis and test procedures. I have a question about testing at this connection pictured. Does anyone have any experience with these or similar machines? I'm not getting the expected response at the connector. I'm getting infinite resistance and there should be 1,200 ohms. Not only that but I get infinite resistance on all 4 of the transmission sensors so I think I HAVE to be doing something wrong.....but what?? Any help is appreciated.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

To bad MMiller (Michael Miller) wasn't still an active member. He could probably help.

I do remember reading about the "M" series, that they had a lots of transmission RPM sensor problems, and you had to remove the whole transmission, out the rear, to replace those sensors. I think I read, there had been a few "updated" sensors, too.

I do remember reading, some years back, that the guys sure felt it was a crappy design, to hide these sensor INSIDE the tranny case housing, with no access from the outside, other than pulling the whole tranny. I think one guy, down South (Texas, I believe), mentioned he got pretty good at tranny removals, just to replace sensors.

Sorry, not much help.

That's fine and thanks for taking the time to reply. I did post this on the Heavyquip forums and got some good initial responses but can't get much followup help. One of the responses on there said that even a novice with a forklift can have the transmission out, replace the sensors, and back in the machine in one day. I'm pretty sure that WE couldn't do that but the thought of it sounds plausible. I've read the service procedure to remove the tranny and it really isn't that bad a job. Right now I'm just stumped as to why these sensors won't ohm out like they're supposed to. I have heard that electrical gremlins are a pain on these machines and I'd have to say that they're right. It sure is sweet when it's operating correctly though.

Just because you are getting service code doesn't mean you can't run the machine.Had a D6R with the same problem run it for several years until it was oil change time in the trans then i did the speed sensors then. There is updated sensors and new harness update,at least on D6R.MIne is 1998 5L machine.

Actual on the R they have two sets of speed sensors(4all togather) for like a backup for the first one if it completely goes bad.Ususal issue is is hard shifts.Other issues is if your getting a lot of plate wear, plus dirt etc. they plug up the speed sensors and then start getting codes sometimes.

There are another one or two speed sensors on an R that will throw a code.I believe one is the priority speed sensor it is on the outside of the trans and has more to do with the brake side of things.

If everything seem it work with in reason then i wouldn't worry to much about the speed sensor code.Might get oil sample to see if you have other problem.

When they completely give up the machine will let you know ,hopefully it won't be in the bottom of a pond.Good luck

Thanks for the response Denny. I wouldn't worry too much about it except that we're having an issue with the machine not wanting to stay in 2nd or 3rd gear. Sometimes when running in 2nd it will kick down to 1st even with no load on the machine. Since this speed sensor code is the only active one we're hoping that is what's causing that issue. Do you think the code and the transmission kickdown issue are related? I also hate flashing lights and if I can make them go away I do. Really the main reason for checking this out though is because of the not staying in the higher gears. The bad thing is that we can't confirm that when the machine is kicking down out of 2nd or 3rd gear that the code is active at the same time. The machine will go for days sometimes without the kickdown issue then when it starts it won't quit. It's just a little frustrating. We haven't owned this dozer long and sort of just trying to deal with some issues. Have to do a blade pivot rebuild on it as well but that'll be this winter.

Lost my long post timed out on me.See if the AMC button is on(dash). It will downshift the machine automacticly.I lock mine out and shift it manually. If not something to do with that, then would look for stuff in the speed sensors.Good luck

I hate it when I lose my post like that. :-( For me just hitting the back button on my browser has saved me several times but doesn't always work. I called my operator last night and told him to be sure and check that the next time he runs it. He said that he thinks the machine defaults back to non auto mode each time it's restarted but I haven't confirmed that with the manual yet. Thanks again.
