Driftless SW Wisconsin

While taking the cow photos in the thread below from my phone, I found a pic I took recently of a new portable cattle shade device invented and manufactured locally. It is just going into production. This was the topic of discussion at the most recent meeting of the local "inventors club".

It is called "Shade Haven".  I recall some folks here trying and posting pics of various other portable shade systems. This Shade Haven seems very well built.  May have other applications too.  I wish them well with this new startup.

Here's a pic from outside the meeting place at our local "incubator".

My first thought when I saw the pic is just wait for the first big wind. Second thought is my cows would have that thing flipped over from rubbing on it.

I'm probably way off - might be the best thing since sliced bread!

My thought too. Has the look of a helicopter. And how many
legs would get broken on the trailer as every one pushed to the center.
Now if there were no trailer, and it could be suspended form
a sky hook, I might buy. :
Tell the boys to keep trying, even Edison took more than one shot to get it right.

The inventor is a local cattle farmer who does rotational grazing of grassfed beef. Wind and cattle damage was discussed at the meeting. He says he has used one and they have enough of them out that they are not concerned about either wind or cattle. I recall he said it was guaranteed for 10 years and in winds up to 30 mph as I recall.

It is heavy and well built with a unique folding mechanism. It seems to fold very easily.  I can't comment on the price other than it is well engineered and heavy, neither of which are cheap.  The inventor said around 50 cows can get under it at one time.

I use my woods for shade in the system I sketched on this board earlier, so this is not something I need but there are places where it would be useful as Ben has described. Just posted here for discussion.

31+ mph will occur *every* year...the thing will never make it to 10 years, IMO, unless it's staked down everywhere it is used. (So much for portability.)

Maybe a guy could fold it up first.

I know it's a novel idea.

That's what they said, if winds over 30 mph are expected, you fold it. It is built very heavy.

Hello Jim, I've been hearing about the cow umbrella but hadn't seen one yet. All I'll say is that cattle can and do destroy everything within there reach. Thanks for the pic.

I like the portability not the price tag. As to the boys here talking about destruction or wind on my shades neither has occurred. My only problem is I do not have enough of them.

Those should just fly right off the lot! ;)

Maybe would have thought it might work, but 30mph winds is a calm week any more here. This summer the trees were blowing down faster than I could cut them.

Had a 40-50mph front blow through yesterday afternoon. About the 5th time this year now.

Does look like a nice deal for portable shade. Where it works, looks nice.

Could use it for picnics and such too!

I personally like the idea. My only concern, other than the ones stated previous, is I'd rather see the whole frame sit on the ground like a skid. I think that would be pretty simple to do. Swap the axle out for removable wheels like those in the pic. Leave the folding arms in the front the way they are but lose one jack and move the other to the center of the frame so that one jack will raise and lower the whole front end and let it down on the ground. To me that would leave that many less things for them to trip over/break off plus it would allow the machine to be easily anchored to the ground if need be.

I'm surprised there isn't a salt and mineral tub on it.

Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle

Never would get to use it "here".  30 mph winds are a weekly and sometimes daily thing here.
