New London, Wisconsin | We sold lots of those when I worked for Quinlan Equip in Antigo WI. from 1978-1982 Great tractors for any work where varied speed and / or pto work was needed. Lots of them went to potato growers. Seems like they all had at least one of them, dairy guys liked em too. Steering is no different than any other 86 series. It was a basic 986 with a hydro transmission. Quite a good and reliable machine. If you want it to do heavy tillage only, get something else, but in its element they were hard to beat. As with any hydro, keep the trans oil full, clean, and don't overheat it by using it where you need a bigger tractor. Also don't let a clutch rider drive it. That floor peddle looks like a clutch and acts like a clutch, but it's a hydraulic bypass valve and a clutch rider will heat his oil up resting a foot there for an extended time.
IH told us we sold more 186's than any other dealer by a wide margin in those years. | |
