Need some help folks. Drove the boss's new-to-him KW T800 tandem grain truck (got it last fall), which was repowered with an '87 Big Cam 3. Scared me carpels when I stalled dead in the yard, the jakes will stall the engine at an idle on 1st setting. Clutch switch is good, the throttle switch on he governor works, checked it with power to it and ohm'd it out after removing it. But, it's closed (power to jakes) at idle, and if you rev it up, it releases the switch, opening the circuit, no power to jakes. Is this backwards? Is there a 3rd switch? How do the jakes disengage when you apply the throttle, versus let off and let it coast? I noticed the weird spring loaded linkage on the side of the fuel pump, assuming that has something to do with letting off the throttle so the jakes kick in?

A bit stumped here fellas, only other engine around that I could compare to was the T600 with an M11 and it wasn't handy.

Minot ND

The throttle switch is correct, there is a on/off switch, should be next to the three position switch.

Practice and you will be able to shift and keep the jake off

when you get tired it shows as the jake comes on

it lets you shift "fast" grin

the "off " switch should be beside the three position jake switch

SW Ohio
Mine has another switch on oil pressure, if it goes below 35 psi jakes are off, so one on clutch one on throttle one on oil and one on dash

Old school, no low idle Jake control on a mechanical engine, you just shut it off.

That's what I was thinking. you use the on/off switch especially on ice.

+1 Dad's '88 Volvo, or White/GMC I think it is, with 400 big cam is just like this. No low idle shut off. Just have to turn it off.

I had this problem about 10 years ago when I put a Jake brake on an old L10 Cummins......if you did not remember to put the Jake switch in the off position every time you stopped it would kill the engine. While I suppose I would of eventually got used to it and I would of remembered to switch it off, I thought it was very dangerous. I did some searching and found out Jacobs offered a low RPM cut out kit that sensed engine RPM and would disable the Jake below a certain (adjustable) RPM. I obtained one of these kits and installed it and it works great, I still have and use the tractor. Through a screw-up on my part, I ended up with a number of the kits and only used one of them. I still have 2 kits "new in the box" if you would be interested. Email is in my profile.

Thanks!
