Subject: Questions about T4 and T5 series of New Holland tractors.

West Tennessee
I have some questions about these New Holland tractors. First off a little back ground on what I will be doing, I mow right of ways as a side business (about 10,000 acres a year) and my little tractors see a lot of abuse. Not as much from the drivers but the mowing conditions. Some of the roads have greater than 45° slopes and it's up and down crossing driveways, mowing behind bridge guard rails, crossing drainage culverts, ect. 12 to 14 hours a day 5 days a week. Right now I'm running John Deere 5093es and 5101es and they have been great tractors but New Hollands price has me thinking I might need to take a second look at them.
My main questions are will they hold up in those conditions such as the flexing of the frames or do they have a weakness there?
Is their front axle stout enough to handle a rack of weights bouncing around?
How are the transmissions, are they trouble free and what is their weak point.
Can their drawbar handle a cx15 bat wings weight? (I know this is a odd question but even my Deeres have broke the whole drawbar support off)
And last how good is their warranties? Does New Holland give any grief when something breaks? THANKS

I am interested in what NAT has to say as well. Are you looking at t4.95 and t5.95? What deere would you buy instead of New Holland (assuming you are replacing current machines)?

I would probably go with the 5100e series. I've always heard to stay away from the 6000d series. The local shop foreman says the other crew is running them mowing and the transmissions are not holding up as well.

I can not answer all your questions. I purchased a T4.105 with the loader last fall, I have around 100 hours on it now, no problems. I am putting more hours on it now being spring time Much nicer than the tractor it replaced, which was a 6080 Allis. Really like the cab on it, nice to operate. The radio speakers are awful on it and the cab entrance steps took me some getting used too. The heating and A/C system is very nice. The buddy seat is awesome to have, my kids love to ride with me and it is so much nicer to have them buckled in. It always started really well over the winter even in the cold. I use it for feeding cows over the winter, cut hay with a discbine, ran a round baler and hauled lots of manure this spring. I pulled a 20' Krause disc with it last fall and a little this spring, that is about all she wants but pulls it surprisingly well for the tractor size. I will not use it for that much unless I have too. I have been very impressed with the fuel consumption, especially when I was running the discbine, it exceeded my expectations, I had it calculated last fall, I do not remember exactly what it was, but it was under 2 gals an hour.

When I did the 50 hour service I found out how much of a pain in the rear it is to change oil on, just to get to the oil filter is a pain. Part of the problem is the loader, but it does not seem like it was thought out very well to actually change the filters on. The second time I change oil on will go better since I know what to expect. The fuel filters appear to be a bear also, I did not change them at the 50 hour because it was winter and did not want to remove the loader at that time. They will be changed as soon as the loader comes off in the coming weeks.

It does have tier IV emissions, but does not use DEF. Basically between 40-50 hours it did its first regen, there is a beep and a icon on the dash pops up showing the regen symbol saying "ON", it does this every 5 minutes for as long as it regens. I have not had it go for longer than 10 minutes, usually around 7-8 minutes it runs. I do not notice a difference in engine performance at all, this spring I had the windows cracked open and I could hear a difference in the engine tone until the regen cycle stopped. Since the first regen, it seems to have regened 3 or 4 more times since. It has been very unintrusive so far; fingers crossed on that front. The book says something like at 3,000 hours the exhaust filter needs to be serviced or exchanged.

Overall I would purchase the tractor again, the tractor size seems to fit my operation well.

Deere9986,
With the T5 or the T4 you should not see these tractors regen very often with the work you do. When these tractors are idling or at half throttle moving hay they will regenerate more often. These engines are at their best when they are full throttle at work. I doubt that you will have trouble with the transmission. The 24x24 or 12x12 transmissions are pretty reliable. New Holland has came out with a 16x16 but I don't know how well they will hold up to a load all the time.

As far as the frame and front axle, I have used one to haul 5x6 round bales on the front and the back and that is what they are designed for. I don't think the weights on the front will cause a problem neither will the water ways and road crossings. You will love the shuttle shift lever and the locations of the shift functions and remote levers(or the cab overall). I would suggest trading one green one off and keeping the other, then decide which you like better by which one you want to get in each morning. Good luck.
