Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
In the big scheme of life, this isn't really all that important, but there must be some slick way to deal with the 12' tail of a 30'(or whatever) long cargo strap, after tying down a pallet of seed. No, cutting off 10' isn't an option, yet.**** Just getting tired of winding the tail up and down thru the sides of the trailer, and then tying a knot that hopefully won't come undone. Guys at lumber yard have shown me how they insert the tail end into the rachet to secure the end, but still have the excess strap to deal with. thanks.. bruce.

I roll up the tail and lock the handle down on it. With a shorter tail make a smaller roll so it is thick enough to fit tight under the handle. Longer tail bigger roll.

I snug the load up with the ratchet, then coil the extra up in about two foot sections...not a round roll though. With the extra, I tuck it under a corner or point where the tight strap will hold it between itself (the tight strap) and the load being secured.

This method also helps if there is a square or sharp corner, from preventing the tight strap from being harmed.

I've been folding it up and throwing it under a tight point of the strap for a long time. Some guys complain that it won't stay, but if it falls out the load probably shifted and the binder needs tightened anyways.

Just keep folding extra into 8 to 12 inch ribbon. Then wrap in the middle with duck tape.

Dad had a loader delivered the other day, and the guy who delivered it had a velcro loop on the short tail on the ratchet to tie up the tails of the straps.  Pretty slick.

i have some reusable tie wraps. they are dual purpose.
i wrap the strap around the ratchet and use the tie
wrap to hold it all together for storage . when i use it
the tie wrap can be released. after tying down your
load roll up the extra and use the tie wrap to secure
it. no more flapping the wind.

My method is similar to this. I leave about 1 1/2 hole in the center of the roll, then run a bungee cord through it, use same method for storage when not using it.

Only problem is you have to take the roll loose to tighten strap.

I fold it up about 18-24" long and then feed it though the unlocking handle then back through the main handle. That way you can tighten the strap down without having to cut extra loose.

I'll see if i can dig up a pic.

Chebanse, IL.....

I get these things from Farm & Fleet that look like big huge kitchen food wrap "twisties". In actuality, they're heavy single stranded copper wire (maybe 10AWG?) that are covered w/a soft spongy coating & have buttons on the end to prevent them from disintegrating. I've searched on F&F website, but can't locate them. They're in the automotive section of the store on the shelf right next to the ratchet straps. Anyway, just take one of these huge "twisties" & run it thru the hole where you've rolled the loose strap & then "twist", just like you would if you were using plain wire. Then, when we return the ratchet straps to storage, the twisties keep the non-ratchet end of the strap nicely rolled. I think they're a couple bucks apiece.

That's my favorite method of securing loose ends. If I don't have twisities, I just use the daisy-chain method. Works fine, but doesn't look as cool.

I roll it up then stuff it into the handle and lock the handle down. If theres too much to lock into the handle then It's usually thick enough to stuff into a stake pocket.

You can also roll it up, then wedge it under the strap before tightening it fully.

Self contained ratchet strap. All of the slack rolls up at the end of the ratchet.

I carry a bag of 12 inch zip ties in every vehicle, never know when one will come in handy, with the tail of a strap I wrap it up and zip tie it to itself, leaving enough slack so I can retighten the ratchet when necessary.

This is also what I do but I tuck the very end back into the ratchet first to keep the end from fraying going down the road then fold in about 12 inches and tuck into the same spot as you works great when the load is tight the strap is not going anywhere no waste of zip ties or duck tape

I always run the end in the rachet for several clicks. That way if the rest comes loose, there is only a strap half as long whipping around. If there's not much more, I just make a couple knots with the extra. If there's more, I like cutncrops idea for the rest.

Velcro cow leg bands work great. Can use them to keep rolls orderly when in tool box also. Can even get nice pretty colors if you want. About any dairy supply store sells them.

i will sometimes coil the extra up in fairly long strips and stick it through the loop in the strap that the ratchet is attached to. when you tighten the strap down the loop pulls tight on the extra strap.

a trucker showed me how to coil the extra up under itself and let it wrap about about 1/4 turn around the ratchet on my semi flatbed. i haven't tried this with the regular ratchet straps but it might work.

I carry 1" strap ratchets that have a 12" strap attached but no hook. I fold the excess 2" strap in a bundle of 12-18" loops and use the small straps to secure it to the tightened part of the main strap. Also works for my 3" straps. -John

Was reading this thread and trying to figure out how to describe Galen's post until I saw it. Works great and the strap won't come undone and you can just let the little bit of excess hang.

which I am not though I can make it work sometimes if I keep my patience, you can fold it up over and over so you have about 15-18" length. Make sure you won't have very much wrapped on the spool, and then you can suck the end of the leftover folds into the spool.

Sometimes you can do what cutncrop did.

There's also a way of tying them that works pretty good. I can usually make that work. Problem is when you have a 30' strap and only need 10' of it but don't want to cut it.

The best way is to just install winches on your trailer. No extra to deal with then.

I've got winches on the front of all my trailers. But I also have 50' straps... so unless I'm hauling a full load of hay there is more than a little strap left. You can only stuff so many loops in the winch.

I keep buying shorter ones, and they keep disappearing. At least they leave the long ones. My little brother apparently borrowed two to tie his motorcycle down, I have a whole mess of 1" straps... but he liked my good DOT 27' 2" ones instead... ;) Maybe I should ask him what he does with all the extra.

The others have pointed out a ton of good ways of handling the slack but I also find that keeping a couple of shorter ones around comes in real handy. If you've got a bunch of used ones around, pick a pair to cut that're chafed farther up the strap and you've done yourself a favor as well as having a couple of handy shorter straps.
