Rivers, MB | yes, I do take fire insurance because a fire would cause a one time blow that could be a tough hole to dig out of. Although I realize that in the long run, I will in all likelihood pay more into fire insurance than I will get out. Its the size of the hit that is the distinction in this case. An engine, transmission, etc would be a pain but probably not a farm breaker. A fire could easily be.
the same goes for extended warranty on electronics. A $400 TV replacement won't be a big deal but a $300 000 fire would be a different story.
There's talk of a farm a little ways from me that in one year, wrote off a shed full of equipment due to fire and then a new combine and quadtrac due to a collision in a field. The odds of that happening are 1:almost infinity but it could happen. And if it did, that would be a deal that almost no farm could recover from, especially with next to new equipment.
Same with hail and crop insurance. I'm sure I will never get back what we pay in premiums. But one large crop disaster or hail storm without them could be a farm breaker. Especially as a younger farmer. maybe when I'm 70 and have everything paid for, I'll feel differently.
