Subject: looking for used Schwans truck

Newfane NY
I see our local Schwan man has a new truck. I know some on here have bought used ones. Who sells them as the driver has no idea other than they go back to Mn. he thinks?

Could use one for a fuel truck as the pickups are getting old.

I think farmboy99 could help you out with a number. A dealer in Flandreau SD has several for sale.

All their route trucks are propane. I seriously doubt calling Schwans will get you any answers. They buy the trucks, use them, get rid of them. They are a food company, not a truck company. The freezer bodies are pulled off and sent to Wisconsin someplace where they get refurbished or junked, cab and chassis end up many different places.

Embarrass WI
The Navistar dealer in Abbotsford WI usually has a lineup of them sitting there. I haven't been through there in nearly a year, but they did at that time. I think their name is Mid-State? Might have to do a dealer search.

Try Larson Implement in Cambridge MN. 763-689-1179. At times they have 50 or more sitting there.

Didn't see any there the other day when I went by. But, I'd call them anyway. Those guys have info to help you out. Why don't you just call Worthington Marshell Schwans direct and ask them?

Yeah good idea. To bad I did not think of that. lol

Would you by any chance have a phone number? With dial up it takes so long to do a search.

605 573 3738 I suppose leave a message if no answer.

He buys alot of the old Schwans trucks and resales them. He has long time experience in the sale of all kinds of light/heavy trucks. Bought my first new car from his dealership.

I live 6 miles from his lot. I could go look if you need.

Jerry said he has about 30 trucks ready to go. He has to come east to pick some more up so freight charge would be relative to how far out of his way he needs to go. Price is in line with my thinking.

Hmmm, maybe a new pulling tractor hauler is in the works.....

Thanks John

I'm just curious. Why are you so interested in the Schwan's ones? Is there something special about them? My understanding is they use a propane fueled cold plate system in the box to keep everything frozen, is that a value to you, or is it removed by then?

i agree. I bought 3 of them a couple years ago and switched 2 of them to gas and put a 1500 gallon water tank on them. That is definatly about all it can handle. I am glad i didn't go with my first plan and put a grain box on it cause there is no way it would have handled it. Just keep in mind when you buy one of these trucks: they are propane, they don't have 2-speed axles, they are very short wheel based, the frames aren't all that heavy, and i would guess about 100% of the time when a person buys one they are very tired. Sometimes they retire them for other reasons that you don't know until you get it home.

I know all of the things i mentioned can be fixed for some $$$ but i thought i might throw that at you. I am not saying i wouldn't ever do it again. That age and kind of truck are hard to find around here. I can't wait until they start parking the diesel ones. Though they sit freakishly low to the ground.

I haven't seen any prices on them. But I see a lot of van body trucks on Ebay fairly reasonable. It still doesn't get you the truck you'd need for a decent grain box. I wonder how many hours and sets of brakes those Schwans trucks have on them?

i can get you about anything you want. You can get either 5500 or 6500 versions. Friend of mine just ended his fleet service contract with them here in ks so he has all the contact info. He just sold a 99 C5500 with a 20K mi reman 454 engine and a recently overhauled clutch and transmission for around $3000, I think the truck had 160K on it total but he had done all of the rebuild work in his shop so he knew what was what. He was telling me that you can get the heavier 6500 cab and chasis for just a little more money. Email is in my profile, let me know if you want anymore info.

I'd consider contacting them directly and ask if they sell or a broker they work with . . . ..
The trucks are listed on Mn Craigslist, from time to time - by private parties generally.
Good luck
