I am looking at possibly swapping out the 404T in my 4620 for a 466 W/ inline pump any suggestions? Also has some one did this and have any pointers?

It is very possible to do.  Mine is a 4520. You will need to change the bolt pattern in the frame rails to the large pattern. You can just cut out the old pattern and weld in plate with new pattern. Use your manifolds from the old engine and all the holes in the hood will line up. Depending on your 466 is may not have a manual tach drive and you will have to use electric tach. My 466 came out of a 4850 and did not have tach drive. You can use old water pump and everything else. It has been about 5 years since mine was done and can't really remember any other major issues.

frame rails and bolt pattern don't need to be changed. thousands of 466's out there with the small bolt pattern.

I should correct myself I would like to install a 466A i believe is the intercooled version out of a early 7720. Did you see a large H.P advantage in doing your Swap? I am going to use it to plow a bit and Farm Stock Tractor pulling. I would like to see 185-200 H.P more in time

HP and torque differences are huge. My old 404 ran at 135 on the dyno. Pulling the planter in the hills I would have to downshift to 4th and open it up. Now I can leave it in 5th at about 1/2 throttle and it will pull right through. I have not put this on the dyno. It should be running at about 200 HP and I don't know if the 4520 PTO would handle it, besides it does what I want so I have all the power I need from it. A good clutch and updated rear end and you should be able to handle all the HP for pulling and working it hard.

early 7720 is not intercooled. torque, especially on low end, would be noticeable. 466 will run at 200 hp for thousands of hours with adequate radiator.

1. If i would find an early 7720's 466 could i use the inter-cooler off of my 4620's 404?

2.I did not mention that my 4620 is a 8 speed power shift W/O diff lock. Would that make any difference in the strength or longevity of the rear end, clutch with added H.P?

3. Back to the 7720's 466 are you aware of any modification that would have to be done to the injection pump in order to use it plowing in the field ?

I am supper excited to get this project going!! I am just trying to get the best grasp on what to expect before i get to far into the project.

I used a 4620 intercooler on mine so I would think it should work in that situation also.

I think the 4620 rear end was beefed up from the 4520 but if it does give problems you can go to a 4640 4 pinion which will be strong enough.

You should not have to modify the injection pump. With a combine engine the big thing is the oil pan and then the water pump.

What do you mean you don't have differential lock? Is the whole unit missing or you do t have it hooked up? Factory?

I just bought the tractor this fall and it has a hinicker cab on it. There is no pedal for a diff lock. I guess I haven't looked that hard but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have it. (Should it have one)??

We just made our own.  Took a steel plate and drilled the holes and then welded it in the frame rail.

Finally found a low houred 466 out of a 7720 with the small bolt pattern for the 4620 side frame. Will get to this project in a few weeks when the crops are all planted. Any tips on thing to look out for or inspect while doing the swap. It is a power shift 4620

So far the swap has been fairly straight forward. Things we have run into is the crank driven oil pump out of the combine had to be dropped down a inch or so to get to the bottom of the oil pan. then I am questioning from you guys that have done this before? the exhaust manifold journals on the 404 are considerably smaller than the exhaust ports on the 466 head.. what did you do to over come this? At this point I am going to run it w/ out the intercooler and a straight pipe the 466 exhaust manifold. I have to give a huge thanks to my Father In-law Gregg Birhanzl for taking on this project. He is truly incredible @ working threw the issues w/ the little differences

Any Advices is surly appreciated I would rather learn from others than spend money on stupid F*** Ups

Update on the project. The engine is installed but has not been fired up yet but very soon hopefully. The little things left are to get the air intake modified to fit over the radiator. For some reason every thing is about a inch lower on the 466 vrs. the 404. There are a few thing to do with the throttle linkage yet it seems like the DB pump had a much longer throw than the Bosch inline pump does. Gregg is hooking up some additional gauges (pyrometer and maybe a Boost gauge) don't worry not cutting any holes in the dash. They most likely are not needed but they will have a cool factor. I also picked up a set of 10 bolt steel wheels W/ 20.8 38 for duals.
I am hopping to have it fired up very soon and play with it on the farm threw the summer, tractor pull a-bit & plow this fall and fine tune every thing, fix oil leeks so I can paint it this winter.
Is it worth using the old 4620 intercooler or should I find a newer one 30-60 series. I was told they flow much better?

any info on the fuel pump or intercooler would be greatly appreciated.

I got the 4620 running it is running great. I pulled it at a local threshing show and it did well 293.8 feet the first time out with no real modification and no weights added. Since the pull I put the duals on and will be running it threw the fall as is to find leaks and other issues then this winter it will get cleaned and put the intercooler on then body work and paint to look as good as frytowns 4620 and gunners 4520.

Now that fall is done I have some more pictures of the 4620 project in action. Since the tractor pull I added the cab and put all new L.E.D lights in from Larsen lights. Thanks Kenny they work great. I hooked it up to the 720 international plow and away it goes. The low end torq difference is amazing I could start in 5th gear at an idle w/ the plow in the ground. w/ the 404 I had to start in 4th gear wide open throttle. I also was able to pull in 5th gear all day long w/ no problem. It would go to 6th gear but way to fast to do a good job and not destroy the red plow. 6th gear was more of a load than I would like to go all day.

The plan this winter is to update the scv couplers to ISO and fix the rock shaft leak. then I will put the intercooler back on from the 404 engine. I plan to use it one more fall like that to make sure I found all the leaks then paint it next winter. Here are some picture from this fall some have nothing to do w/ the tractor but what the heck.

Don't know a whole lot about the technical differences between the intercooler for a 20 series versus one for a later model tractor with a factory 466. IIRC, you mentioned something about the ports being considerably smaller on the older setup. If the older setup "chokes" the airflow too much, the intercooler may hurt you as much or more than it helps. A 466 w/out an aftercooler will run all day set at 200 hp and never hurt it as long as your radiator can handle it.(Unless you're pulling it to the max all day with no let up, in that case it would probably be wise to have the proper one.( ie., OEM for a 466) A good pyro will let you know) Unless you want more power than that, or maybe the aftercooler has a "cool" factor, l probably wouldn't mess with it.

Just my two cents!

I haven't 100% decide what to do w/ the inter cooler yet. I have been advised the same thing on it not flowing enough air. The main reason is the cool factor/original look. I am considering looking for a newer one off of a 50 series. I believe a 30 series would possibly be sufficient, But they do not look the same they have a more refined look to them.

Over the weekend I traded the 4620 with Brian (8104) for a semi. Hopefully he will continue to post progress on the tractor. He has the intention to start working on it right away. It is going to be a sharp tractor when he is done with it.

650/65/38's on rear and 16.5x16.1 on the front. It is a nice light footprint for in front of the planter yet still pulls nice.
