What are the opinions on New Holland manure spreaders, particularly the model 195? Reliability of the apron chain, gear boxes? Is the frame built to handle hired hand abuse? Thanks for all replies.

I like our 195. I (not hired man) broke an apron chain last month. Too much manure and spreading over a newly installed tile line. Wasn't much to fixing it. I rented it out one and I lost my top beater over that ordeal. They are well built and I would keep this one but I'm going to a vertical.

I've had mine for probably 6 or 7 years, bought it used.   Welded on one of the spreaders on the lower beater and put in new seals in the slop gate cylinders.   Otherwise, never did anything to it but grease and make sure there is NH spreader oil in the gear boxes.   Mine has a poly floor, only way to go.

We've had to reinforce the axles and have had quite a bit of trouble with the apron speed selection system on both of our 195s. We only run ours in slow speed and don't try to change it now. I'd try to find a spreader with the hydraulic apron speed control.

Thanks for the replies. So, a hydraulic ram such as on a Pikrite is the way to go? And are vertical augers a better choice then horizontal?

I think balefire is referring to an orbit motor driven apron chain. We had a single axle New Holland, forget the model number, with the ratchet gear type of apron drive, worked OK, the ratcheting gear can be a little trouble, needs to be well lubricated. Have a Deere(same as Badger) with an orbit motor driven apron. Absolutely love it, the orbit motor driven apron is one smooth running spreader.
