Subject: Low budget homemade tile equipment

NE Iowa
Just a small part time farmer with really rolling ground with wet spots. Been fighting these wet spots for way to long but was too cheap to hire it done. Decided to make my own 3 pt tile plow last summer. Used it to put 20,000 feet of tile in the ground last fall. In general all of our fields are pretty steep but lots of small swales that we can usually plant but if it is a wet year they will only 1/4 of what the rest of the field does. Most runs had 30'-40' of fall in only a 400'-500' run so no need for laser grade control. Didn't have a tractor big enough so rented a 200 hp (26,000#) MFWD from a neighbor and made all the runs down hill. Used the plow and hand shoveling to dig the start holes and rented a mini-excavator to dig in the connections. It can only do 3" or 4" tile and we bought a semi load (18,000') of 4" tile in 250' rolls for $.309 a foot. Used a homemade spinning table to unroll the 250' rolls by pulling with a Gator. Wanted to share these pics in case anyone else wants to try tiling on a budget. I have about $1700 invested total in the plow:

Laser cut custom steel plates from local fab shop: $660
Steel Tubing & flat stock: $440
2 Hyd Cylinders $290
Old IH 800 planter tongue from scrapped planter $0
Pins, bushings, hyd hoses, fittings $190
Paint $25
Weld rod, oxygen, etc $50
My time designing & fabricating $0
Lots of hours of retired father's welding $0

very good, remember when the first tractor mounted plow showed up in the area, looked very similar to yours. it was a neighbor and his two sons. no laser, no gps, they did have a cheap transit, and the plow had a indicator to show pitch.  first day they put in 1000',had a long backhoe on the back of a 4020, it was a long tiring day, trying to figure out how operate the thing.  second day they rented a case backhoe, and got some things figured out, and they turned into tile plowing fools, they could get some amazing amount of footage installed in a day.

Unfortunately no action photos. My 70 year old dad was always in the tractor and I was the grunt on the ground making sure the tile was feeding properly so no time to get pics. We could get about 5000' a day installed but we had lots of fairly short runs. I was actually shocked at how well it worked. We don't have much for shop equipment. 35 year old stick welder, chop saw, 4.5" angle grinder, torch, and a dirt floor was all we have to work with.

Between working full-time, wife working full-time, farming a few hundred acres, herd of cattle, and five kids under the age of 12 I don't need another sideline business. Will gladly provide detailed specs, dimensions, and better pics to anyone that wants to try to make one themselves.

Looks good. You said you ran down hill. I'd change that to up hill. If you go through a wet spot your water will chase you down making your connections a real mess.

We had a super dry fall with basically no subsoil moisture going into winter so that wasn't a problem. Tractor size was marginal so had to go downhill. Hard to explain but even though these areas were wet they still had a lot of slope.

I'm building two. My progress.

Some parts on backorder until a week ago.
My wife's uncle cut with a HD plasma the parts and "did me a favour" by "bumping the holes out" . Recut parts and reamed them true on the second batch.

I should have ordered the longer 2" pin since I am using the bushings.

Front half is almost done and I am thinking about how to fit the boot together for welding.

Good plans.

Thank you again. Vince

I have been having a great week. I just see how hard farm equipment gets used, especially tile plows. If one tractor wont pull it, lets add another and another. With hitch pins being used as pivot points without grease, just looking for trouble. I can also see people hooking these onto a 4wd and hooking a rock something will give. I have to give props to the OP for making something that works and wish you all the best of luck.

Here you go. I admit to using two layers of 3/8" vs a 1/2" plate as the plans called for.

This is what you were looking for. Made two at once, this one for a neighbor. He put in a lot of tile with it. He beefed up the vertical tube with extra steel. He was using both his bunk packing tractors with their blades on and another all chained together.

I'm finally on the last of the welding. I goofed and welded the bushings before I welded the plates to the main tube. Distortion and the tight fit made me wonder how to get the hinge on the bottom half. These bolts hopefully will let me get a good alignment .

I'm going to add a wooden guide to help the tile to slide in the boot. I hope to have this thing parked tonight.

Nice work. I finished mine about exactly one year ago. Keep us posted and maybe start a new thread with it in action. I never got any action photos last year. What do you plan to pull it with?

I moved it around with my 7120. 18.4-42 on cast rears, no liquid 24000#. I took two 60' dry run passes and was shocked at the almost unnoticed load on the tractor. Easy to unload the tires and just start spinning while changing the angle at full depth. My plan is to build: a water level, hinge flap on the outlet of the boot. (My gravel filled the boot coming out of the ground due to my error) a block in the bottom to turn the tile back when rammed down from above, depth chain.

What am I overlooking?

Plan for use is a tier 4 case Magnum 180 CVT with tall skinny duals and I have homemade saddle tanks hanging off the front. I'm on RTK but I don't know just how slow it will engage. We have massive stones. Planning on running a dry run first before laying the tile if GPS will keep me on the same pass.

I will probably rework the tip. I have no suck as I goofed up and got smart, added an RandH machine chrome point before welding on the top plate to the point. It sits wrong.

I found that making a dry run didn't make it any easier to pull. Of course I only had singles and it seemed like the loss of traction from having loosened ground was more of a hindrance than a gain. Having duels it might be a different story. Are you going to use 250' rolls or big rolls? Make sure you use internal couplers, tape them, slow down when you come to them, and have a guy on the ground "stuffing" the coupled area down the tube. 4" tile doesn't have much room to spare. I put in 20,000' with just a borrowed tractor and my 73 year old father in about 3 days last fall. Thought my plow would be semi-retired but neighbor wants me to put in another 20,000' for him this fall. I owe him a lot of favors and we will use his tractor so no money will change hands.

I'll most likely do small rolls. An old 3 pt carry all and some stuff in the scrap pile have my attention for a start at a two roll carrier. I may try my luck with a larger farm that has a Wayne's cart that hasn't rolled in a few years.
It took three different wood block profiles before I was willing to try it.
I had a 30' chunk of non perforated and it feed really well with the right block and really badly without.

I'm concerned about hitting massive stones and destroying everything, thus the two pass plan. My duals will be with 36" spacing. (Potatoes) hopefully I will straddle any pockets left by digging up the smaller basketball size stone.

You have a "royalty" payment once I get some pipe in the ground and I know where to send it.

I made one of the plows as well. I made a few changes. I went with a 7" tube so that I can install 5" tile with it and I made it longer so that I can get to about 4ft in the ground. I did go heavier on the pivot plates. I also had to change a few of the dimensions on the 3pt hook up to get it to attach to my quick hitch. I also added the liquid sight gauge to help you make sure that you are installing tile at correct slope. It worked way better than I thought possible. We put in about 3500 ft with it in a few of our low spots. The first day I pulled it with a jd4555 front wheel assist. worked ok but traction was an issue so the second day we put it on a friends cat challenger. Then you have a tiling machine. He helped for one day at my place and after we were done, he borrowed it for a day and used it at his place. They said I could use there tractor any time I needed as long as they can borrow the plow. They also said that I cant ever get rid of it unless it is to them. Now I am looking to add some sort of grade control to it beings it worked so well.

how thick is the wall of the tubing for your verticle shank/feed tube. i dont see how it doesnt bend without having a seperate solid shank in front of the feed boot like most production plows.

It would be real easy to add a piece of 3/4 flat iron on edge on both the front and back of that boot for a little extra strength. I think the one on front would make it pull a little easier too. Good job Smallfarmer.

The tube is 1/2" thick. Under the dirt on the plow is an extra 1/2" angle that helps support the tube.. I was also questioning if it would be strong enough and so far it is still true as the day we started.

looks good. do you try to watch your liquid gauge and tilt the boot to control grade or use the 3 point to raise it up and down to control grade. the small plow i built a year ago doesnt tilt so i just have to use 3 point for depth control

I'm the one that sent you the plans. Thanks for the pics and nice work. Last year I borrowed a tractor from a neighbor to pull the plow and they refused any payment for it. This year I got to repay them by installing 20,000' of tile for them. They provided the tractor and made the connections but dad and I ran ran our plow for them. We both got all our wet spots fixed cheap and no money changed hands. Your situation sounds very similar and nice to see.

Could I get the plans to make this? thanks [email protected]
