Subject: CIH 955 Planter with Early Riser Monitor

N.W. Illinois
Decided it was time to replace the old 1980 IH Cyclone 800 six row planter and upgrade to a better planter and monitor system. Purchased a semi-mount 12 row vertical fold CIH 955 planter with the Early Riser Monitor. I don't take possession of the planter until late March at the earliest. I have the monitor and getting ready to send it to Sensor-1 for testing and cleaning. I'll add that my plan is to purchase a GPS antenna for my speed input from Sensor-1. Anyone know where I can find an Early Riser Monitor manual for purchase? I've done a fleebay and google search with negative results. I wanted to do my reading now since I won't have much time with the planter before planting. After planting, I'd like to replace the opener disks and other wear items and looking for a good parts source. I see Shoup's has carbide tipped firming points, which I assume is a better product in comparison to the CIH originals and cheaper I might add. I need to replace one seed population sensor and was looking to order that from Sensor-1. Any direction and advice is more than welcome.

Jim- I think I bought the twin to your planter a couple months ago! I will check my manual tomorrow and see how many pages I would have to copy to get you the relevant info. I'm assuming you don't need safety warnings and such :). That might be an option if you can't find one. I'm sure it would be pricey but did you check CIH? Jeff

Subject: NOW I understand you other planter question

West Union, Illinois
In another thread you asked why all the planter upgrades (http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=446742) NOW I understand your confusion. Running a mounted Cyclo on a Snoopy ... you're dancing to a totally different drummer !

Listen close to the tone of my voice when I say that .... I'm not knocking you, just making a factual statement.

I like all 3, the mounted planter, the Cyclo, and the Snoopy. It's just that for my operation none of those are the best choice.

The 2+2 was one of the finest concepts of its day. It's just IH had a lousy execution of a great idea.

The IH air planter was ahead of everyone else in several areas. But I'm growing seed corn and I have a couple needs it doesn't meet.

Don't let anyone tell you that you're wrong. But understand we are dancing to a totally different drummer than you are

No, it's a Martin. Can't remember if it was called Martin Silos or Martin Steel. Dad put it up new in 1980. Was used for haylage for years, we now put dry shell corn in it ( we poured a floor and added ductwork for aeration).

Great picture and appreciate your offer in regards to the manual. I checked CIH website but was unable to locate an Early Riser Monitor manual. Can you share the publication number so I can do a more effective search? If I'm backed in a corner I might pester you for setup instructions.

Shoup for parts. Yes. Last set of Blades from shoup were Ingersol blades to go on a CIH drill, same as dealer for significantly less. Sensor one is an option. As well contact Ag electronics.

Also, Shoup now has regular (standard) and heavy opener blades. Heavy is a better option if you no-till. JMO

If I could make a recommendation, I would seriously look at Ag Electronics or Ag Express. I was not pleased with my dealings with Sensor-1 last year and After spending about $600, will be spending a little more this year with one of the others to try and get a decent system. I sent my monitor in, they "tested and cleaned", it came back with an almost illegible display, couldn't tell the row numbers one from the other very easily.. had them build a brand new harness and all new sensors from them, never got it to read all rows correctly and could not get them to make it right. I had one row that was always showing as skipping when it turns out that it wasn't.

Thanks for the information. I understand every business has their off day from time-to-time, but I'm concerned they did not "make it right". Anyone else have similar experience with Sensor-1 or another company?

I would consider doing those openers and firming points before planting. This is also the best time to add keetons or rebounders, and you might find other things that need help. I used a dj3000 monitor on mine and my outback s-light plugged into it. This gave me speed and guidance. I have had good luck with shoup. Make sure you have extra shim washers when you start.

For wear items, I recommend a mix between Case and Shoup. I put up a post about the carbide firming points here

http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=405378&posts=1...

Carbide is lasting twice as long as the regular ones and still counting. Pass on the carbide seed boot though. As seen in the pics.

Boy that planter looks familiar.
I too got a cousin of it.
I went from an 8 row, to this 12 row. And super happy. It pulls easy, plants great. Only negative I have is the way the markers fold up for transport
Here is mine just on and off the trailer.

Very happy with AG Express, not happy with Sensor 1. Had all kind of problems with their seed sensors. Kept thinking it was monitor, was their sensors. Put in Loup sensors and all problems ended. Love the 2+2. I plant beans with a 3788. Was not sure about using it on my 900 HRF. The 5288 works fine on it. I too may be able to help you out on the monitor book. I will look up mine tomorrow. Email if need be. Since you already had a cyclo, I'm sure you will be happy with this one. I went from a 8 row White 6100 which is a great planter, to a 12 row 900 HRF because two years ago this is what I could afford. Boy has it turned out well. Very happy with it. Even seed spacing isn't too bad and with some seed this past year it was very good.

Thanks fellas. I sent an email off to Ag Express in search of sensors and a GPS antenna to replace the RADAR signal. The previous owner states the monitor worked fine last year so I may skip on having it tested and cleaned. Who knows what kinds of problems the monitor may have after shipping.

Case ih can get you the manual. We got one for ours last fall when we got out 900. It was pretty cheap.

Found the manual!! I had to change my search to 900 Early Riser Monitor to find it on the CIH website. Seems a manual was not specific to the 955 or I could not find it. One question though... Utilizing a GPS source for my RADAR signal, do I still have to calibrate driving the 400 feet as if I was using RADAR or is the GPS per-calibrated?
