Anybody know the recommended procedure for a restart after changing the fuel filter on this engine? Mine started and ran until the air got to the rail. Then I cranked it several times fairly long and it finally restarted. I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual pertaining to this. Is there a better way to get the air out? Thanks!

Shouldn't get much air in it with the design of the system unless you splash a lot out. Haven't had any air in the lines on the CR TDI's that I've changed. The older PD motors with the older style filter I just cranked until they ran which didn't take long at all. The older VE pump motors I'd crack the #3 injector line.

Have an 09 tdi, just changed mine for the first time,I did take the whole fuel canister off and cleaned the inside, filled it about 1/3full with diesel and installed the top, left the middle screw out til fuel started to come out as I tightened it down. Then when I cranked it over I tried to keep the rpms at about 22-2300, never did die, maybe I just got lucky

Dearfield Co.
I would not prime it with anything oil based -----maybe howes or that but not atf etc. due to emissions junk.I think the shop manual says to prefill it which I shook my head at but check for your self

I believe it pulls the fuel from the center of the filter so the fuel you prefill the housing with will get filtered.
I wouldn't fill it with anything other than diesel, not sure what the purpose would be. The DPF will not like most of the products and the engines generally do not run on straight fuel conditioner either.
VCDS trick would probably work good, when I bought mine the newest TDI we had was an 06 so I didn't get the CAN option so I can't do anything with my 2010.

"Proper" way is to get a VCDS diagnostic cable, hook it up to the car and run the electric lift pump (unlike older tdi's the new common rails do not cycle the lift pump when the key is turned on). I went ahead and bought the cable which makes it very easy to purge air from the system after a filter change. Can also do A LOT of other things with the car if you have a cable so it is worth the money if you plan on keeping the car for a prolonged period of time. I have also heard of people getting along fine just filling the canister. Here is a link to the complete "proper" procedure: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5/2009-2010-VW-TDI-fuel-filter....

Larry NCKS - 1/8/2014 06:50 This is exactly the information I was looking for. Is it just the cable that I'd need, or will I need software or something else? Thanks again!
Just the cable with CAN software you download. You will need a laptop.

Just 5-6 times give contact (turn ign. key position 1, I do not know how you say there, just to bright signal lights without starting) and keep a couple of seconds.

Larry NCKS - 1/8/2014 16:52 That doesn't work on this one, momo. Think as has been stated here, it worked on some earlier models but not on these later ones.
I did see a procedure for "hotwiring" the pump to make it run IIRC. Can't remember where though. A VCDS interface is invaluable in the long run though, so much you can do with them, saves a lot of headaches.
