Subject: John Deere 4040 quetion

Hi guys,

I am new on this forum, firstly thanks for a great forum and I have read some interesting threads. I am from South Africa and enjoy the discussions on here.

Now my question; I have just purchased a Deere 4040. Now this is an old tractor, but still n really good condition. I have heard some good things on it, and even on tis forum there are some discussions. However, there seem to be mixed sentiment on it. Could I provoke some more discussion on the topic and maybe get some feedback from anyone who has this machine.

I only have a small farm, 250 acres, and it will be used for all chores on the farm.

One last thing, the dealer I bought it from claims its a 81kw (110HP) but all the info I get on it says it's a 67KW/90HP tractor, can anyone assist me here?
ps: I know very little about tractors!

Thanks.

Eastern Iowa
90 HP. For PTO rating and the engine maybe 110 HP. No turbo on this motor so they use some fuel but they run forever.

Western Ky.
If it has a 404 engine 110 hp at the pto is well within possible. I have a 69 4020 (short pump) that is set at 115hp. That is about you could get out of the short pumps without a turbo. I have heard claims of 120 hp non turbo 4020's with the rosa master pump, but, without going to the bigger cc pump head there is the danger of twisting the shaft out of the pump.

Here is a link to a site which has information on a many tractors including your JD 4040. http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/9/94-john-deere-4040...
Their info sometimes has an error so don't take it as the final word, but generally it is a good source of Tractor Data.

Hello Eltonp

If it's a North American built 4040 in Waterloo, Iowa, USA, then it has a 404 CID naturally aspirated in-line 6 cylinder engine rated at 90 PTO HP.

If it's a European built 4040 in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, then it has a 359 CID turbocharged in-line 6 cylinder engine rated at 107 PTO HP.

I have a European built 4040 & had it tested after I had a set of new injectors installed. It tested at 107 PTO HP.

Mine is US model with the 404 engine and power shift transmission and also has a M&W turbo on it. Last time it was on the dyno it was around 120hp.

Baldwin by-pass filter constantly circulates a small portion of the oil and filters it then returns it to the crankcase.

11 additional quarts of oil plus the external mounting helps keep oil cooler.

Internal view with orifice restrictor

Replacable filter element.

Nice machine, ove here in SA we have very few of these with Cabs, actually I haven't seen any in this series with cabs. Generally ours just have a roof/open.
What do you use it for mostly. I am looking to pull a 4 farrow plough and planter then some feed grinding with hammermill.

What are these tractors capable of

Mostly now just 6 row planter and 15 ft JD no till 750 drill.

Used to plow with it 4-16's was a pretty good load in our high clay soils. Also used a 10 ft mounted chisel plow that was also a pretty good load.

Been a good solid machine for me.

I've got a 1980 model [purchased in 88] with 6500 trouble free hours. It's factory rated at 90 hp and dynos at 100 hp. 6 gallons per hour fuel consumption working hard and the same with a light load.
