Subject: 4030 Deere Any Good?

I see a 4030 used Deere with 4000 hours with cab and Quad Range. Were they good tractors and what should I look out for.

Would it behove me to go up to a 4040 or 4050? What would be the difference?

I still run a 4030 on my mix wagon and it has been pretty dependable. It now has around 9000 hours. Engine overhauled at 7500 hours but the quad range has not been touched. I occasionally use it for raking hay, running the pit pump, and on the auger. Some guys in the area have added a turbo to theirs and that makes it a little better for field work. Otherwise it does not have a lot of low end torque.

I had two 4040's and they were a lot more tractor than the 4030. Both had the quad range also and were very dependable too (never touched the engine or trans in either of those). I used them for planting, baling and pulling forage wagons mainly but also pulled a plow a time or two along with some other field work.

If I were you, I would get a 4440. The same size, much heavier rear end, much more in demand when you want to trade or sell.

The 4030 wasn't a bad tractor as far as giving trouble, but it has a reputation as the biggest fuel hog JD (or maybe anybody else) ever produced. A 4430 takes hardl any more fuel, but has much more power. A 4430 would be a big improvement, but a 4440 is a big improvement over a 4430.

I bought one 5 years ago have not had any problems withe it had 4900 hrs on tach like the said little low in power but I got it for a loader tractor I put a allied loader on it and hyd strong enough for 6-5 round bales and will pick u 4-5 silage bales.i don't know were they come up with it burning more fuel than a 4430 I have one of them to an the 4030 don't even come close in fuel consumption of a 4430. main thing I would look for is how good quad tranny shifts I have seen guys buy them thinking shifter needed adjusted and it lead to synchronizers.

I stand corrected. I was thinking of a 4230. I really don't know much about a 4030, although I believe it does have a smaller engine than the 404. If so, it probably is better on fuel than the 4230, which everyone said took a lot for what it did.

The 4030 had a 329 engine made in Dubuque. Not a bad engine but most said it wasn't as good as the Waterloo engines. The 4040 had a non-turbo 404, dead reliable but harder on fuel than the 329. The 4050 was a larger frame tractor and had I think a non-turbo 466. They weren't as handy as the 4030-4040 and took a lot of fuel. Some years of 4050's had 359engines, I think.

Too many people look at how much fuel a tractor uses in a given time, say a normal working day. What they need to be looking at is how many acres did they go over in that time period & how many gals fuel they used doing it, (gal/ac instead of gal/hr). Iknow back when we were running red tractors I traded up from a 7120 to a 7240mfd & was really upset with how much fuel the 7240 used. The 7210 would run all day till quiting time on a tank of fuel & we would have to stop about 2 hrs before quitting time to fill the 7240. BTW, this was pulling the same piece of equipment. I complained to the salesman & he asked how many more acres was I covewring in a day with the 7240 compared to the 7220. When I realized what he was saying I saw that even though the 40 was using more fuel per day I was getting over a lot more acres with it & the gals/ac were actually less than what they were with the 20. FWIW

Good point. I'm sure a 4050 would do a lot more work in the same time as a 4030. I remember a good friend of mine had a 4630 that he pulled a 7-18 JD plow with, and a 4440 that he pulled a 5-18 IH 720 plow. One day they were plowing one behind the other, when it came time to fill up, they both took the same number of gallons. He said "Either that IH plow pulls damn hard or that 4440 burns a lot of fuel"

I bought one used about 15 years ago. I use it daily with 265 loader for loading hay. I think it is a great tractor for it's day and what I use it for. Mighty handy for loader work. I can unload a truck load of 3 ties 480 bales in less than an hour on 1.5 gals of diesel. I put a foot throttle on it to help with shifting the quad tranny which has never been touched. With over 10,000 hours it has a ether addiction. Let me know where this tractor is, if you decide not to take it. I would buy another one.

The 4030 is the only SGB tractor Deere made in Waterloo that size. It is more-less a 3020 size tractor. The 4040, 4230, 4430, 4240, 4050, and 4055 are all more-less 4020 size tractors and are a lot more tractor in terms of the meat on their bones, but they are larger and won't be as handy of a little tractor. I'd pick a 4030 as a being a better tractor then any of the Mannheim offerings prior to the 6000 series. Basically all similar sized Deere tractors will be older without cabs or else European.

I'm struggling with some of your apologies.
I have never heard in 50 years anyone comparing a 4030 to a 3020. It's bigger in every way than a 3020, more like a 4020.
Smaller than a 4040? 10 hp and 3 inches shorter wheel base.
And a 4020 doesn't hold a candle to a 4430 in any way. Shorter, lighter, less hp, on and on.

There is NO WAY I'd believe 4K hours on that tractor. That's just over 100 hours per year.
Likely 14K hours.

From the other posters it appears they are not NAT approved. I don't care for john deere tractors very much. That said, the neighbor has one and I think it is one of the nicest tractors I have ever run. His is a 4 post, and it's a nice tractor for hay and other lighter loads. I used it side by side with a 4230 pulling silage wagons and couldn't tell any difference in power. I also thought it started a lot better cold.

4030 was a nice tractor for what they are. but a 4050 is a whole new machine. refined quad or 15 speed power shift. nicer cab, refined hydraulics. heavier, more power, bigger engine.
the 4030 and 4230 were basically a 4020 with a sgc on them.

we had a 4320 set at 140 hp and demoed a 4055 when they came out, the stock 4055 would pull the same equipment so much better, with the 15 speed and a nice cab I could have sat in that thing for the rest of my life.

for sure if a 4050 or 4250 is in your budget I would for sure go that route.

if 30 series is your budget I would look for a 4430, we have several customers with 4030/4230's and they all comment they wish they would have gotten the 4430.

we have so many 30-55 series small frame tractors in the area that are over 10k hours and only had minor work.

there is nothing a 4030 can do that a 4050 cant,

The 4030 was the smallest of the "30" series tractors that JD introduced in the early '70s with the Sound Guard cabs. Basically, as an earlier poster said, it was a replacement for the 3020. The engine had about 52 more cubic inches and it was rated about 3-5 more hp than the 3020. The "30" series was pto hp rated as follows: 4030 - 80 hp, 4230 - 100 hp, 4430 - 125 hp, 4630 - 150 hp. Of course, most owners "turned them up" a bit (some did a lot) just as soon as they could without voiding the warranty (some probably sooner than that). Just remember that you are getting a 40+ year old piece of machinery and plan accordingly. Also, as was stated earlier, the "40," "50," and later series will give you more hp and, in most cases, a "beefier" tractor.

I had a 4030 and it was temperamental. The cab was shaky. I purchased a new 4240 and it wasn't even close how much better the 4240 was. 4030 was too light and the injector pump was temperamental. It was only 8 years old with low hours when I bought it. I never had a loader on it and used it for hay equipment.
