Subject: They're back .... MTZ tractors

Alberta, Canada

The new MTZ line of tractors are back in N/A it seems (formerly known and branded Belarus) anyone been up close to one of these units?? Just curious how much they've updated them as they look a lot different from pictures anyway. Will a no frills tractor at 1/2 the cost of a electronic gizmo loaded up mainline tractor sell?? Often people complain about having to get the dealer truck out and a someone with a laptop to get their tractor running well this one I don't imagine you'd have too. Unless there is electronics on them now for emissions or something. They don't look as goofy anymore, factory a/c, new front mfd, hood flips up in front, no more oil bath air cleaner etc.

Did it look like this one...

We had one of these MF super 90's .... left a lot to be desired too but the new ones have come a long way. However my father wouldn't hear of it after the all the "fun" he had keeping this one going lol!

.
Had an 800 for several years. Easy on fuel-that's my good thing to say about them. I'd rather buy a much older IHC or Deere than chance one of these again.

Picked one up in '99 with a patch of land we managed to buy. Would run 40 km/h when nothing else would. Sold it because no one wanted to operate it unless threatened with a blunt object, lol

Just checked to see if there is a corporate connection between MTZ Belarus and Rostselmash, owner of Versatile, Buhler and Ezee-On - they seem to be two separate companies.

Back in the 70's when Belarus tractors first appeared here they were selling combines under the Belarus banner that were made by Rostselmash (the Niva and Kolos).

I owned a Belarus a few years ago. It was a real problem solver! Normally, when I park an old tractor in the yard where it shows from the road, I get a steady stream of people annoying me by stopping to see if it's for sale. With the Belarus, NO ONE ever stopped.

they never stopped making them

they have a full range from 14hp to 450 now, they even have a deisel electric IVT in the pipeline called the 3023

they built models with a choice of engine to suit the market, and have tier 3 ones. the high hp ones run deutz engines

they still make the models that were exported in the 70-80-90's.....i think they have made over 3.3 million of them, and still sell them by the truck load in eastern block countries, MTZ is actually a company of Belarus the country.

Yeah i know they still made them but there was some sort of issue between the plant and the old importers in N/A. Really I don't know the whole story regarding it. Last year MTZ built plant was still pumping out the tractors I read the produce over 60,000 in 2012.

MTZ is the actually plant in Belarus. Maybe running under the MTZ logo might be better for them in the N/A market with the bad rep Belarus gets. There are pockets though in Canada in the EAST you see lots of them. I believe the tractors that require the Tier 4 emissions us Bosch electronic injection.

Comapnies like LS tractor, TYM, McCormick, Landini, Mahindera and so on are importign these lower cost tractors close to that 100hp now with loads of options, and electronic comforts. What's going to happend in a few years? As its not like a JD, CNH or AGCO product where there is a large dealer network already in place and its not like you can fix them yourself when it comes to programing stuff and so forth with transimissions etc.

Oh... I think there's enough of us that remember what those tractors are like that we're not going to flock away from Blue, Green or Red any time soon. We had a 520A for a lot of years. For most of those years we wished it would just burn so we could collect the insurance. We ended up selling it for not very much to have it out of the yard... and the jocky that bought it didn't get very much either. For all the years we had it, it was forever known as 'the pig'... or 'the Russian pig'
I don't see much new underneath the new hood on the one pictured. It still looks like the same old red pig.

Later ones were orange... early ones were very much red with a cream colored hood... and a canvas roof on the cab... that would probably crush you like a bug if it rolled. Their one main feature is that they were very fuel efficient and had good torque although I always found the governor response to be very unsteady.

Looks like the front axle is finally a useful design and tire size. The "old" ones had 2wd size tires and a mickey mouse engagement.

14F/4R syncro? Gotta love the old 18F/4R twisty shift.

The model in the picture comes with a 2-Lever Mechanical Shuttle Shift Transmission, 16F+8R gears and can be special ordered from factory with a 24F/12R or reverse cab controls or front pto, air hooks up for trailer brakes etc. Just more $$ is all.

The under 100 hp ones I believe have the 14F/4R syncro. And yeah the old 18 speed though it seems to work is a goofy setup and a challenge for some to learn to shift.

See they  found a new spot to stick the batteries.

they are doing a good job with there newer machines, and listening to there customers, the new ones are not as cheap as the old ones, but they new ones do have good qualities and up most simplicity for there customers, i am a big fan of what they do. they build a couple real nice small ones for muncipal operations too the 320 and 622, with lombardini motors in them

the belarus brand name is used in russia, i have seen it when i was last there, also still the MTZ, there are factories in russia that take skid units for final assembly for there own export customers, rops ones for africa etc. kirovets trade separatlely to belarus, kirovets works with SDF now to get tractors into russia,

its funny 10 years ago you couldn't give one away, now we can't find them here, they are exported to other markets, exporters ofMF, Ford, are taking all the belarus. its funny these exporters don't take the powershift models, they are taking these mechanical trans machines. its funny i just finished reading a post here of someone saying buy a maxxum over a JX, apparently the maxxum is more future proof tractor, ........really the JX is being sold by the boat load in these other markets in the world, its been the work of MF and ford and fiat (JX chassis) in developing markets that has kept the price of parts for older models realistic for the rest of the world

the one tractor made in russia that interests me the most is the ATM terrion, i seen them at trade shows over there and on dealers yards but don't know anyone with one, from what i can see they use deutz 2013 engines, ZF T7200/T7300 trans and carraro axles, with a simple comfortable cab and finish is good. it really is a impressive list of reliable components, in one package

Do they still have the isolator switch behind the seat or did it move up front with the batteries?

I haven't seen any new Belarus/MTZ here since the 5300 series. I don't think anyone even sells them out here.

Not sure about the isolator switch and I don't know if they have dealers out your way yet. They have a website that lists them though.

Southern Alberta
minimal parts and lack of dealers for service usually make these tractors very expensive for the first buyer.

Second buyer of these odd balls usually get it for pennies on the dollar and sometimes the deal turns out to be good.

Please don't be the first buyer.

I agree if you buy a new one you'd better plan on keeping it a while and getting service out of it and yes buying them used is a bargain. They are sort of like buying a low end chevy .... as soon as you drive it off the dealers lot you loose 30% a few years later lucky to get half! Actually buick's too but then again there was great deals for the consumer buying them used as they were good cars.

As for no parts I'd have to disagree at least in Canada. I'm puzzled when I hear this from many  as in the 16 years I've had one its never been an issue nor have I really needed any till this fall. Possibley some of the lower production odd ball models there is issues with. You can buy lots of stuff online now if you don't have a local dealer for those who have old ones and are looking for parts. Many modles were MASS PRODUCED like a million of them were made.  And the plant still makes the real basic ones too I believe so they have parts.  Plus there is jobber parts from eastern Europe, China, Pakistan and so forth.
