Subject: 855 BIG CAM CUMMINS OVERHEATING?

Decaturville TN
85 model big cam in my water truck overheated yesterday. It was full of coolant and had a clean almost new radiator on it. I had to pull over 3 times on the 10 mile trip home pulling a Spracoupe to let it cool. It hit 240 degrees going up a hill so I thought stuck thermostat. Today I took off the 2 bolt housing where the top radiator hose attaches to the top of the engine expecting to see a thermostat there but there was not one there. Is it somewhere else or missing on this truck? If it has no thermostat what would make it overheat like that? Thanks for any advice, Rick

Is your fan kicking in? Belts tight? If those are good then could be water pump could be going out. Is it a low flow system?

Fan was running, belts tight, radiator is a couple years old but only has maybe 4000 miles or less on it and is clean. I guess I am dumb but dont know what a low flow system is.

It's been a while since I've messed with one but iirc the thermostat is not where you'd expect to find it. Maybe on the right side near the front?

The low flow ones have coolant lines to the radiator no bigger than an inch and a quarter or so diameter. The old full flow ones have hoses that are 2" or larger.
Low flows were relatively late in the big cam production run. We had an '89 Volvo with a low flow system.

X2 on the impellers falling off.

Has happened twice to me in last five years. First time on Case 2870 took me a couple of days to figure out because some times the impeller caught and pumped and sometimes didn't. When I pulled the pump first time it looked fine, second time I found the loose impeller.

Thermostats are on the right side towards front, remove them and see if the issue goes away.

The thermostats on a low flow 855 are on the passenger side and if i remember right, they are above the coolant filter in that housing. there are two of them and they both are differant so remember which one came from where. From personal experiance i have had one that would climb to 230 then all the sudden cool down and continue this pattern. Pulled stats, put new ones in and problem remained. A new set of belts ended up being the problem here. The old ones were tight and looked good but they were glazed enough to cause slipage.

they used plastic waterpumps back then that would spin on the shaft and obviously greatly reduce cooling capacity.had it happen in a steiger I used to have. Also had serpentine belt issues on a n-14 as aformentioned or a faulty sender unit.could plumb in a mechanical one to see exact temperature.
