Subject: Rock Pickers Hyd, PTO, Ground drives?

Alberta Canada
I am in the market for a cheap used rock picker. Have noticed 3 types out there, ground drive, hyd drive, and pto drive. Which is the easiest on a tractor and picks the best? With the PTO ones I imagine there is a slip clutch of sorts. I hope to pull it behind my 6410, but if 100hp isnt enough I could use my 4440.

Depends on the rocks wither you need PTO or Hyd drive. Medium to small rock pto or hyd IMO, Large Hyd so you can reverse it.
I'm looking for a Picker also & I'm looking for a HAYBUSTER with the wheel to get a wider sawth.

Subject: Years back Dad had a Anderson

North End I-15
Ground drive . Poor choice . Rocks would jam and it was a bugger to unplug. I bought a Anderson PTO picker and it was really a good machine . It would pick rocks from baseball sized to office chair size . (with a little care. ) The Anderson had one fault . It was a drive over picker . some times the Case 600 I pulled it with would not clear the rock . Also one needed a neck like an Owl to run it all day. :>)
Never had a Hyd drive as never had a tractor with enough hyd to run one.
The one nice feature of the Anderson was the high lift . It would dump into a 2 ton truck with side boards . Handy feature if you have any distance to haul rocks for removal. One spends as much time dumping as picking in good (bad) conditions .

Go hydraulic. we've used a IH 1256 with a weak hyd. pump on our Schulte and it still worked. Your 6410 would work fine on one.

we have 2 ground drive Degelmans....and always thought the hydraulic was the Cadillac one to have....That is because you can engage and disengage without getting out of the tractor. I have never used a hydro one and was told they aren't that great when trying to grab a big rock...with the ground drive you can creep up on it and take a slow bite and then slowly slide it in the bucket and not put as much stress on the picker like you would on a constant moving hydro reel....if you look at PTO degelmans you will see they have the most repairs compared to ground and hydro....a pto degelman is nice but it disintegrates itself and is a tad more dangerous throwing rocks....
my choice would be to have a hydro engage disengage ground drive....that way you aren't getting in and out all the time when the bucket is full...

Don't even think about the other 2 options. PTO will dangerous and hard on things. Ground drive is fine as long as you are moving but if you have to stop to dig a rock out with the prongs?? and need the reel to help the rock along, you need the hydraulic option. Too many times, you have to reverse it a little to get a big rock through and PTO or ground drive would be way to awkward. In my opinion, and i've picked my share of rocks, hydraulic is the ONLY way to go.
