Subject: pro's and con's of 873 Bobcat skid steer

Bourbon, Indiana
I've been needing some sort of skidsteer for the last few yrs. and I finally broke down and bought one. It's a 96 873 high flow, with total 2100 hrs. and 300 engine hrs. Duetz engine!! Heater, A/C, tracks, 2 buckets, and they threw in a new set of forks. It's not new by any means but it fits the budget.

Never owned or worked on a bobcat, so are there any things that I should watch out for on this particular model. Hopfully it will lift my 2500lb. bulk bags LOL, that's the main reason I bought it.

thanx

Brad NC. IN.

It'll lift your bags fine. Don't climb out with the arms up and weight on them. Man killed not long ago not to far from here doing that.

I find myself on a skid loader every day doing one thing or another, one of the handiest tools in the shed here ... have fun.

It won't have excess capacity on a 2500# bag. In fact it will be at its limits. You might try it with something like tractor weights or a bag if you have one. My 853 couldn't lift it at first but my hydraulic pressure was down. Once I adjusted it to specs, it works fine except I run some extra ballast on the rear for bags. They are good machines.

Rated capacity on a 873 is higher than a 853. Check this link for further info ...

You made a good buy. I've always bought a bobcat for my skidloaders and never have had them in the dealership. Good choice on the bobcat.

The 873 is rated at 2400 lbs operating ( I think without looking at the tag in mine ),I think their was a counterwieght option, because operating wieght is figured at the bucket pivot pins. Keep the oil cooler clean,we have extra gauges in ours, don't want the engine oil temp over 220,give the engine a minute or two before shut down, exhaust temp is slow to drop to 500 degrees. keep an extra fuel filter ,they are just to small in my opinion.
The Bobcats are great machines, they used to make up 50% of all skidloader sales, don't know how or when newholland took that away.

I had an 873. It is recommended the timing chain be changed at 2000 hours on the duetz. If it breaks, the pistons will hit the valves and it get $$$ to fix. The lift arms are a potential weak link and can crack in tough use. Newer models have much heavier arms. Overall, a good reliable machine. 2500 lb lift is kind of near it's max. It is why I traded to a s300 which is rated at 3000 lbs but will lift more.
