Subject: Case drain JD 4450

I need a case drain port on my JD 4450 to run my V Sets. Where would I connect this? This will be run by a power beyond setup. Thanks!

The correct way to hook up a case drain to a 40,50,55 series is to pull the plug out of the transmission housing using a 1/2 inch socket wrench. (The plug you want to take out is right under the right-hand SCV if you're standing at the drawbar facing the tractor. I've put them on both 40&50 series tractors this way. The kit from john deere is just a flat-face pioneer hose coupling and an adapter to take the 1 or 1 1/4 plug down to 1/2 inch pipe thread for the coupling. This gives me a zero-pressure return for the fertilizer air delivery carts I have run on my old tractors. As far as v sets and the power beyond, I hope someone else chimes in....I would assume if you have it on the power beyond, you need a return that will get you to the hydraulic oil cooler, as I believe the zero pressure case drain will not cycle through the cooling system.

Thanks - the V-Set fan motor has three lines - Pressure, Return, and Case Drain. I have the Pressure and Return lines going through the Power Beyond, but I need to have the Case Drain as well.

My dealer made a jumper hose to run the case drain with the return, he said that's what presicion planting told him to do. I haven't tried it yet, so cant tell you how well it'll work.

I was told that on a high speed hydraulic motor, it has to have absolutely no pressure on the case drain line if equipped...reason being that any oil that weeps into the case needs to be released through the case drain or it will take the seals out of the motor. The mechanic told me that a return line can give a small amount of back pressure eventually taking out the seals.

No No No No NO.

Standard return ports can have periodically have 200 psi of backpressure on them. Case drain ports need as low as possible (ideally 0psi).

It won't matter that the case drain doesn't go through the cooler like a motor return. Case drain is very low flow. On a vac planter with ASD (two motors hooked into case drain), if you take the fitting off the case drain hose and hold it over a bucket, you get a very fine pencil tip stream. Maybe something in the range of 10 gallons/hour. That amount will vary from one piece of equipment to another, but it will always be a low flow..

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
No don't tee them together. The case drain needs to go to a completely unrestricted return. I've seen where someone welded a fitting onto the fill tube as a way to get this small amount of oil back to the tractor.

I like that method of hooking up a case drain. You can always be certain you didn't accidentally connect to a port containing back pressure that way.

how i have hooked them up at the dealer and how i hooked my own up is that the vac motor returns throgh the power beyond at the left scv, the left scv returns to sump. by returning into the power beyond is there is less restriction then returning through the scv. it also eliminates the chance of a lever getting bumped to neutral possibly damaging the vac motor. the seal drain lines i run a hose to the case drain in the transmission case. on my planter now i am running the hydraulic drive and the vac motor seal lines in a single 1/4" line back to the tractor.

Power beyond return back pressure will be the same as all selective control valves on all 10,20,30,40,50,55 and 60 series row crop tractors. The only selective control valve returing to sump is the lower RIGHT HAND when used with a single acting (one hose) cylinder, and only late model 30 series and later models have that feature, and the hose must be pluged in the left coupler for that to happen. The "back pressure" is about equal to the pressure at the hydraulic filter housing because that is where function return oil goes to. DO NOT plumb CASE DRAIN oils to the return side of these systems. The correct 0 pressure return is the plug under the right hand SCV in the transmisson case. Hope this helps.
