Looking into stocking bolt bin with metrics. It seems on our combine, the most used wrenches are 15,18 and 24mm. Can't find a chart which shows what bolt size requires a 15mm wrench.

Thanks. The chart I was looking at shows for standard thread a m10 bolt requires a 16mm wrench. That's why I was confused.

I'd say 10 mm, too; But that is one of those sizes that the nut and bolt head size can change verses bolt manufacturer.

(find the same thing in 7/16" bolt and nut combinations, too= 5/8" or 11/16")

Example: If you buy CAT bolts, 10 mm bolt = 16 mm bolt head

ISO, DIN or JIC specs will play into the hex head size for the same bolt thread diameter.

My limitd experence with this metric crap it that there is no standard size for wrenchs on any given size of bolts. Need no less than two wrenches for a given size bolt to make sure you have the right wrench, some times three. Now look at thread pitches - 3 differnet one's off those also. Very much a P-I-A when getting replacements to match up with everthing else on the equipment.

The reasons you list are part of why SAE is phased out for the most part.  Metric offers a customizeable solution to an OEM's needs. Some need a very fine thread, others need very coarse others want in between.  Some use a bigger head on the bolt, others use a smaller head and some use a very small flanged head. Theres times I've used a 10mm wrench on a 10mm bolt.  It all depends on the application.

Believe it or not though, there is a code that engineers follow. There is a firm code and then there is the "courtesy code". basically lists what sizes to use and avoid.

I just wish they would've dropped the entire Imperial system back when you old farts were in school so I never would've had to even think about it. I like metric much better as it is, but too many things are still the other way.

SAE was refined over generations to standard sizes where by a single glance at the bolt hole/head you knew what to expect.
When a new system like metric comes along in a flash this kind of confusion is what you find.

In the metric system you will normally only find one head per bold size and normally only 2 types of treads (course and fine). But there are some manufacturers (inc. Deere) that like to mess things up. The standard wrenches needed are: 11,13,15,17,19,22,24,27,30,32,36mm. I believe that the bold that goes with the 15mm wrench is normally an M8.

M8s usually use 12 or 13mm heads.

Your list of wrenches may be true for whatever you work on, but the reality is that you need most sizes. GM uses even numbers for many of their fasteners on the engine side. Accessories are usually odd numbers. Cat uses even's everywhere as well.

You forgot 18mm-Deere uses a lot of 12mm bolts, and USUALLY you need an 18mm wrench--BUT---some of them are 19mm headed, so keep a 3/4" wrench in your pocket.
And a 22mm, 27mm, and a 30mm.
