Looking at one of these and I'm wondering if they are any good. Will be pulling behind mfwd 5488 on ground that has never been subsoiled just moldboarded for many years . That's why I think I should stay with 3 shank , it is heavy clay. Any opinions ?

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
It is the precursor to the 2500. It is fine. Two toolbars were closer together on a 500 than on a 2500, so occasionally the coulter disk would contact the pivot bracket on the shank. (If it has spring reset type shanks) and the coulters can only be 20", instead of 22" like the newer model. Otherwise there isn't much difference. I would pull 5 shanks with that size tractor around here.

You can probably pull 5. We pulled 5 with a 7400 Deere for a couple years. Now pull it with a 7730 @ 15 to 18 inches deep @ 5mph. Works great

Holy crap, you guys should come try that around here. I pulled a 5 shank last fall with a 9250 four wheel drive, and it had all it wanted. 18 inches deep @ 4 mph.

SE Michigan
If you want to make it a 5 shank, I have (2) complete one shank wings that I took off a DMI 500 7 shank to make it a 5.

Email in profile (I will not check it untill Monday morning when I get back to my office)

We have one and use it on most of our bean acres. It has MRD shanks on it and a 7" points. Shear bolt mounts. Been a good ripper for us.

Springfield, MN
If you do the 5 tooth go only as deep as you can. Every year you should be able to get a little deeper. Do you need to go 15" deep? In our ground 10" does just fine.

I ran a 4 shank Blu-jet behind my 4850 last fall. Most places I barely knew it was in the ground, others I ran out of traction, and a few I ran out of power. To my knowledge this was the first time this ground had been deep ripped.

If you're running over a lot of ground, you will feel like you're not going anywhere, but you should be fine on power and traction with the 3 shank. 4 or 5 shank might be tough if you have a bad compaction layer.

What would a machine like this be worth , it has a factory covering attachment on the back .
