Subject: Steiger 350 for Tile plow

NE S.Dakota

A neighbor and I are wanting to pool resources for tiling. He has a new Steiger 350, it has power shift, will this tractor go slow enough to pull a tile plow? I have been told if you cannot travel less than 1 mph at 1800 rpm it will be a problem.

I have an old Steiger ST270 with the 20 speed, would this be a better choice.

The type of plow we would buy is based on which tractor, a Goldigger 3 point for the Steiger 350, a Waynes for the ST270.

Any comments welcomed

Thanks in advance

The newer tractors derate in the lower gears, the old steiger has a slow first gear but will likely need some help hyd pressure wise with a gold digger, don't know about the Wayne's since it grades differently.

The derating is a pita on those tractors... I am not sure if the smaller 4wd Stiegers derate though, I would check into that.

Otherwise a Wayne's on the old girl would be a nice setup.

I'm not sure about derating, but our new 350 kicked into neutral the first time the tow strap came up tight pulling out this truck yesterday.

Edit: anyone have the answer to the picture direction problem when posting from an iPhone? This is the first one to show up wrong for me.

I have a Gold Digger 3 point on a Steiger 350 and get along well. Biggest advantage to the newer 350 is the hydraulics are closed center with much better flow. The 270 has open centered hydraulics which are slower and affected by engine RPM. The 350 hydraulics are load sensing and pressure compensating.

I recently put a new hydraulic pump on the ST270,can the pressure be adjusted up to handle the plow? I have noticed, when lifting the wings on my disc, it really does not matter whether the engine is idling, or high idle, the wings lift at the same speed.

Gpsdude, that ST310 sitting in Clark looks like it should have a Waynes plow attached, I assume, the Cummins would be a better lugging engine if you had to back down the throttle, but then there is the hydraulic issue again..

We have not bought anything yet, just looking at the best way to use what we have, and get this project off the ground. Still sorting out the info you gave me on RTK and Tiling electronics. I did speak with G Street about his setup, need to talk some more.

Case IH dealer can change the kick out setting for low rpm. Tractor I recently purchased was used for a 3 point tile plow and they had to get it reprogrammed for the lower rpm speed. Gettin by

Well, before I ever get to that point,I need to get comfortable with my own problem areas,on my farm. I had the opportunity to ride with a professional tiling machine operator this last fall, he taught me a lot in a very short time. All of my land would benefit from drainage, and since they are not making any more land, getting more out of what I have, would be the best answer. As you know, from my inquiry over the moldboard plow, I don't jump into anything. I did look at that plow a couple times, still tossing around the idea of plowing some cornstalks, but every time I go to a fertilizer meeting, I get talked out of it. We should sit down and discuss all of this over a beer some time.

I ran my new gold digger today and I love it! I'm pulling mine with a JD 9220 on a 3-point at around 1,100 RPMs in 1st gear at 1.2mph and its doing fine.
