Does anyone have a good design for a bridge to get an irrigation tower across a ditch? The bridges vary from about 30 to 40 feet long and about 4ft. wide. Most of the ones I have seed are made out of pipe but I think I would rather work with something with straight sides. Anyway, whatever works.

We have some made from 3 pieces of old drill stem pipe with sucker rod slats. They are good up to about 25', anything longer and they need a truss built under them. We have some 40' bridges made from 2 pieces of sch 40 8" pipeline pipe with drill stem slats that work real well for bigger ditches. Then we have a bunch made from 2 pieces of 8" channel with 2" channel cross pieces. The channel iron ones are far easier to work with but cost more to build because of new iron vs salvage. I don't have any pictures but can get you some if you like.

I have seen some that were made from 3 railroad rails turned upside down. They left about a 1 inch space between the rails, and held them together in about four places along the lenth of the rails. Solid as can be, but I think the rail might be hard to come by.

I've got some really long bridges, up to 80', longer ones are 5' wide. These are an arched bridge made of angle iron. Purchased from John's Welding and Tool, Nebraska. They have jigs for the bridges, so they can make them quite readily. For what we needed, price they quoted, we couldn't justify building our own, especially on the real long ones.

Here's a few pictures of my limited experience with building pivot bridges, last month. We built four from 20 to 28 feet long. The two 20' ones don't have the trussing under them. I don't know if these are built right or wrong, but all the materials were only worth $150 per ton if not used for this.

Some of the guys around here are only using two pivot pipes with angle welded across it on bridges up to 25 ft long. They are using three wide with a similar trussing like you are using. Are those old Reinke pipe? By the way, nice collection of Valley signs.......

It's old Gifford-Hill pipe; the sign is up on the north wall.
I thought about using fewer lengths of pipe, but this stuff was really rusty. That and I ran out of suitcase weights so I wasn't able to test the pipe to failure. I figured I was better safe than sorry.
