Subject: Manure spreader apron problem

Iowa
My neighbor is using my NH 195. Said it keeps shearing bolts because when the apron comes around in the back of spreader the chain is rolling up around the sprockets then binding up against a floor crossmember. and shearing the bolt. The chains are new and have hauled less than 5 loads. I say they are to lose he is arguing with me about it. I just had surgery so I really cant go over there and work on it for him. Any ideas so I can tell him so he quits calling me every 10 minutes. Also this is my last working spreader I have right now and really dont want it destroyed. thanks

Sorry did you put it in backwards it does happen once its out hard to visualize what direction it was when in especially if you tore it out one day and put in a few days later

Chains are too loose, new chain is going to stretch until it settles in.

What the heck is his argument?

Tighten up the slack adjusters, and spread.

His argument? he is 80 years old and I am 30 and dont know anything. Funny thing is he hires me to wrench on his tractors but I guess I know nothing about aprons. Cant tell him anything. lol

is the apron twisted? this could cause it to bind. No matter the problem, it sounds like the apron is too loose.

My best guess would be that the spread of the teeth is too much for new chain on worn sprockets.

The quick solution is to tell him to shovel his manure off your spreader so he doesn't break it, and return it to you.

I just read my book and the apron is suppose to droop 1/2 to an 1 1/2 inches below the bottom of the axel at its lowest point if you have more than that it is too loose, and the way you describe it thats what it sounds like

See below. My NH 190 did the same thing until the drive shaft on the gear reduction broke off due to so many sheared pins. It would shear pins even when it was almost empty. I think the drive sprockets are worn enough that the apron would wrap around the sprocket. Sometimes when the pin sheared I would have to pry the shaft in reverse and the apron would drop off the under side of the sprocket, It will Not heal itself. I had the same problem on some feed coveyors in the past, I replaced the drive sprocket and the problem disappeared. I hope you don't try to fix it yourself and hurt your back again.

If the chain got too loose, it probably fell off the chain return at the back. Then it fights itself back onto the return just ahead of the axle. Happened to me this summer. It was tensioned properly with a new chain but the paint wore off and it fell off the return within 10 loads. Ours was T-rod and it only took 20 minutes to disassemble and get back on properly.

If your neighbour is trying to get a pintle chain back on properly with a loaded spreader, he's going to need back surgery too by the time he's done.

It has to be loose.
Is it on the guides correctly?
Is it straight on the drive shaft?
Oil it.

he got the load off without shoveling it. which is good because he is 80 years old. he brought it back over and i watched it while he turned it on. it has two aprons in it oiled up good. when the chains come around the back they want to roll up around the sprockets and bind on the back floor crossmember. I cant really get under it or inside it to check things out but I still think the chains need tightened up. I will wait till my friend gets home from work and have him tighten them up if needed. How tight should they be? i cant find the book for it anywere. I have several of these 195s and this is the first time I had trouble like this but the others had chains that were pretty worn and these chains are new.

Pretty tight, just got rid of Gehl 1410 (same as NH 195) so don't have book. As you look from back of spreader, shouldn't see hardly any bag in web. Seems like there was a measurement of less than an inch between chain and support on frame. Problem is, it probably needs a link removed, not a fun job on pintle chain. Ours only had the one web however ,you could get it either way.

We had a new holland spreader for years and I have seen the chain really loose and it will still run without any problems. It sounds like there is a problem with the old sprockets and new chain. They will do that if the sprockets are really undercut. Usually if it was the tightness of the chain the problem should be going around the idlers the the front of the spreader not the drive. The chain isn't out one link and not running square.

Either the chain needs tightening, or the rear sprockets are so worn they are worse than U shaped, instead of almost V shaped and need replacing.

Or something bigger is broken off/ loose up front, or one side slipped and the slats are crooked, or other big obvious deals.

The chain needs to be pretty tight, doesn't need much give.

With the new chain, pretty common for it to loosen up, paint wear off, dust works out, links take the sharp edges off themselves, and it gets loose in the first 10 loads, so that would most likely be it.

Actually I bet the rear sprockets are wore and need to be replaced, they are carrying the chain around. Tightening the chain will help it and work, but I bet you need to replace the sprockets to make it right.

Very similar to barn cleaner chains, A new chain on a worn sprocket and the chain will want to wrap on the slack side of the sprocket.

maybe the sprockets are worn? somtime they get so worn they turn into hooks and dont let go of the chain and it wraps everything around the sprockets.

Had this happen on a brand new knight-there is a weld kit avaliable to stop it-its a 1/4 rod that you bend and weld around 1/2 the sproket-we had to take the chain apart to do it-stops the chain doing what you described-only 1 load and did it-then again at load 10-actually broke the chain-which knight fixed under warrenty and then sent us this weld rod package-real common on new chains-I will see if I can take a picture!

I had problems with mine a few months ago.  replaced the sprockets and tightened chain up good.  Then ran it for a while empty to watch it and make sure it was ok.

When our chain broke, took the payloader and tipped it upside down.  Really doesn't hurt anything if you do it right. Replacement aprons are not all created equal.  Our first replacement was junk.  Had "connectors" welded every 4' or so.  Single apron, they simply let go.  Current apron was made by local blacksmith. Heaviest link available in that pitch, 1.5 times as many slats to spread the weight and heavier slats .  Was cheaper than any other option.  And I agree with any comments above about keeping aprons tight enough.  A tight apron should "pull" off the sprocket. Our sprockets are original.
