Well, Not 100% sure what the Second Series consists of for models.

We are Currently operating a 900 Versatile; and our latest is a 555 Versatile.
The 555 Cummins V8 had some mixed reports. Our tractor was taken to Cummins, where it was re-poweredred with an 8.3L Cummins; Prior to our purchase.

We are feel that the tractor's transmissionition seem to shift differently, and we are somewhat questioning the way the trans shifts; it does not seem to move into a gear as far as our 900.

I wouldn't recommend anyone using tractordata.com. A LOT of their info is incorrect. Some of the years produced on certain models are wrong, some horsepowers are wrong, and just a few other specs are inaccurate. I've got TONS of factory brochures from when the Series 2's were coming out and being built and I've compared specs and tractordata usually is off from the manufacturer's factory specs. It can give people a lot of false data on certain models.

We have owned a 500 for several years, they were built for row crop work. If you are just looking at a tillage type tractor your would be much better off to look for a 750, 800, 835, etc... Our our 500 we also been converted to a 8.3l Cummins 6 cylinder, rear ends were swapped from inner to outer planitary rearends from a Versatile 145. The orginal rearends had a roll pin that would shear and take out the rear ends and we also have broke an axle on the original in the field. Transmission is different on the 500/555 series compared to the larger ones and they have a wet vs. dry clutch. It is supposed to be easier to shift on the fly, but you must readjust the brake often if you want to get it in gear from a stop (we normally end up shutting the tractor off). We have looked at changing the clutch over also but it would take some re-engineering and more space. Personally, I would look at a different model, love the old versatiles but would not buy another 500/555.

Series 2's are nice older tractors. They had a decent cab, and if the A/C got some routine maintenance they cooled GREAT. Noise levels were very acceptable if the floor mat and cab interior padding is all intact. I would recommend staying away from a 500/555. Most of the parts are obsolete and they could be troublesome depending on how they were used. If you just want a reasonable puller get an 850 Series 2. They are very reasonably priced and most were reset to 335 HP at some point in their career so they are very good pullers.
