Any interest out there for new row crop cultivators?
With all the weed resistance will row crop cultivators be back or is there a new product coming out like roundup did 15 years ago and wipe out the row crop cultivator market?
Any insight?

In some places they never left. There's still a lot of ridge till in a few areas of Nebraska, including here. I really doubt the cultivator market will ever be wiped out. I've yet to see an iron resistant weed.

We've been cultivating for the last 25 years. Parked the cultivator the last couple of years and sprayed everything.  All NON GMO.  Chemicals were hit and miss. I really didn't like the Chem bill. Will be going back to Cultivating this year. The savings are tremendous. It does take more time however.

Agree with others - highly dependent on where you're from I guess. Cultivators are a major part of farming here. As far as new ones go, Othman leads the market bigtime around here since Deere quit making them.

All cultivators are in the weeds here. We have had excellent weed control last year with Roundup mixed with other things. Use Callisto on corn and last year we sprayed Sonic on our beans pre-emerge, which worked so well we plan to do so again this year.

I always cultivate some every year. Some years quite a bit, other years, not so much. When I switched from 36" to 30" rows in 2012, I advertised for and bought 2 cultivators right away. The 12-row rear mount I didn't use in 2012 but the 6-row front mount I used a little. Had a dirty field that had point rows so I like the front-mount better for that. I also have a fair amount of contour rows. I just wanted to make sure that I had some in the shed before they either got popular (& expensive) again or all disappeared to the scrap yard. Like someone else posted, there aren't any weeds resistant to cold steel. And in certain years, cultivating and opening up the ground is a good thing.

Do you still have your wide row cultivators?

Yes I do - someone else already posted the Craigslist link to them below in this thread. These are the 2 we used until last year. Contact info is in the ad or my email is in my profile here.

Orthman and Hiniker are actively marketing their cultivators again thanks to herbicide-resistant weeds. They never quit making them but did not spend much marketing $$$; not anymore.

Good luck. We have multiple front-mount cultivators due to a portion of the farm being organic and they are getting hard to find. Keep your eye on Craigslist as well as the classifieds in the MOSES newsletter.

Decent Lilliston units are becoming quite hard to find as well.

I've been thinking of a way to make them work with a FWA tractor . . . . .

I just had a visit with a sales manager at Henke Machine Yesterday. He said sales of Buffalo cultivators have increased over last year.

I have never quit cultivating, but have "slacked off" somewhat over the last few years. If the weather cooperates I intend to go back to cultivating everthing twice. Cultivation has proven to a valuable tool in dealing with waterhemp and other resistant weeds.

I'm also taking on some organic beans this year in a field where a lot of deposits have been made to the "weed bank". My Buffalo will need to spend some time "grazing" there.

In the RRV seems alloway is still popular choice. I don't see it listed but i believe they make a 36x22" model.

Finally, a cultivating post. The BTOs around here told me they can't afford to cultivate. I told them I can't afford not to. The high-speed, single-shank cultivators with tracking (planter has stingers) work a lot better than the old ones.

Of course, you have to watch for root pruning. Don't just get in the cab and go.

I like my 856 JD. It's a 16-22. Might be looking for a late model single-shank 24-22 (856, Elmers, Alloway or Wilrich).

We would have fewer BTO's if everyone still had to cultivate. Seems like the advent of RR crops just accelerated everyone trying to expand.

"Now that we have all this extra time on our hands since we don't have to cultivate, we can farm a lot more acres......"

JD and CIH needs to design a row crop cultivator that the BTOs will buy! ha ha

Would a rotating beacon help get them excited? It could be added to current designs easily enough.

Not that many years ago cultivators would bring scrap price at auctions. Last year at a consignment sale, they were bringing really really good money. I was shocked at the demand.

Cultivating is not the answer here. It will just throw the pigweed seed into the row. Then it is hoe handle time.

We still use hooded sprayers with some pretty heavy doses of chemicals hot enough to melt the hoses. Which, still doesn't work sometimes.

hey
Rockman- is that a 2294 case? mine needs more weight to handle a 12-30 c-shank. how fast do you run on the narrow rows?

2294 is a '87 model, long wheel base, heavy front ax, large rear ax, 10-bolt hub duals, decent tractor. The 856 is a single-shank, 30-ft. 16-22. I stuck 4 weights in addition to the rocks in the rock box. Speed cultivating shouldn't matter when the cultivator is down? I suppose 4-5 mph usually. It gets a little light power shifting on the road. No troubles in the field.

I ridge till cultivate my corn with a 6 row Hiniker 5000. Would like to find a Hiniker 6000 12 row but there's nothing in this area to even look at. Cultivating is the only tillage I do. I like to plant on top of the ridges.

Thanks for the reply. I think I can add a few more weights to the front and get along fine. You are right about speed, just was curious about roading. Thanks again.

We haven't cultivated in years, but we are going back to it this year. Switching back to rows for our soybeans and using the cultivator to fight the resistant weeds. Around here, guys have been putting down Treflan, then incorporating it with their bedders. That keeps the actual rows clean and then they can clean up between the rows with hoods and cultivators.
