Subject: Snowmobile Salvage yards in MN and surrounding states

Central MN
Last week I posted a message about a bad fuel tank on a 1972 Johnson Snowmobile.

http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=349498&posts=9...

Well I fixed that problem but now I have another problem with the same sled. Yesterday I put the fuel tank back in and put in a new battery and fired up the sled in my shed because I was going to launch out of the shed in dramatic fashion! Well she fired right up and I hit the gas and NOTHING HAPPENED! So I opened the hood and to see if the clutch was stuck as hd been the problem before. Well that didn't work. By this time, my shed was filled with smoke and I couldn't hardly breathe so I drug it outside. I then fiddled with the reverse linkage thinking maybe it wasnt fully in to position. I then hit the gas expecting to move however I then looked down and saw the decompression knob was stuck out just a hair so I pushed that in the sled lurched forwrd and the hood lurched further forward and broke off! I should have had the hood down but oh well. The good news is the sled ran great except it didn't steer as well as my newer sleds but maybe thats the way the old sleds were. Does anyone know of a place in MN, WI, IA, or the eastern Dakotas that I could find a good hood for the sled? Heres a couple pics of it!

N.W. Illinois
I was just looking at vintage Johnson and Evinrude snowmobiles here http://www.davesomcwarehouserepair.com/Shop-Online.html and here http://vintageomc.webs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/4129752
Hopefully the hood isn't to out of line cost wise. I find it hard to believe the prices they want for complete sleds. I grew up with Johnson and would have to say they were not to reliable. The worse was the Rampage models where the engine sat in your lap. There was always something wrong with them and now they are a highly desired collectable.
Does yours have a rotary(Wankel) engine? The rotaries loved gas and oil.
You are correct about the steering. They like to go straight. It steers much better going backwards but be careful you do not catch the ski on something, you will stop quickly. Always come to a complete stop before going in reverse from forward and vice versa. I would not ride far from home without somebody else riding another sled, could be a long walk home. One other word of caution, the brakes are lousy on those sleds. Really bad, do not depend on them for stopping, brake fade occurs after one good use.
