Subject: Case 1845c Are they good?

Summit County, Ohio
I have been looking for a used skidsteer for general farm use, mostly in sludge/water treatment lime for my fields. I have been renting New Holland LS150's and I liked them, but I have found a 1990 1845c with 2800 hrs. They are asking $12,900. the tires are 90% and it comes with a set of logger tracks. The dealer claims that this is really the best series Case ever built, claim that the 4-390 engine is bullet proof. The price seems very high for the age, but they are saying its the best skidsteer ever, seems a bit of strecth. i am just trying to get some others input on them. Thanks.

My uncle worked at the Case Proving Grounds. He bought the last model year 1845C available. It won't pick up as much as some of the newer models but as for durability and reliability I don't think they get much better.

They are a great skidloader. That price seems pretty high to me. Sounds like an 8000 dollar machine to me. I have owned one for 17 years with minimal breakdowns. The biggest issue we have is keeping the radiator clean. I would look for a 1995 or newer machine with the grey cab. They have the newer style quick attach and the newer style lap bar.

Make sure the chain case access caps are glued down with gray RTV. If not the cases will fill with water. The drive chains have a habit of breaking. In the winter park it with the lap bar down so the park pins want freeze in the locked position. Weve had guys rock the machine so hard that the park pin mounts broke out of the sides of the chain cases, the pins were frozen in. Wheel bearings should be checked before you buy. The engine is great and the hydro/hydraulic system is also very good.

Have had one for 4-5 yrs. Good farm machine. Much easier to work on than previous 843 Bobcat and 793? Mustang. Also hasn't needed as much. Not many hrs per yr, but in/out alot, which most newer models aren't as freindly for. Don't know what tracks are worth, but got ours for ~$9000 with ~3700 hrs. (not through dealer).

As mentioned, chain case can be a problem. Ours froze up pushing snow and did have water in case. If replaced, would be slightly bigger machine, but handy size all around. Look around at constuction sites, many of them still on the job.

Local Bobcat salesman jokingly said if they still made them, he'd probabaly have a different job, so good testimony from competition. Pretty good older machine.

Can't comment on the cost but all I have to say is I have spent a lot of hours in the 1840's and 1845's and I really don't have anything bad to say about them. Good machines!

I was looking at a Bobcat a number of years ago. Bobcat dealer had a 1845C and his comment "best skid steer ever made". Gave 8500 with 3500 hrs.

Price is too high for that machine, unless it was absolutly cherry, and even then that is pushing it....

They are not bad machines, cummins motor is good, except hard on fuel in this loader. Final drives and chain case area are weak spots.

In my opinion, they are kinda crude old loaders that are pretty reliable and a little overated.

I had a Case 1830 for a little while but did not like the hand controls. If you are used to running a skid loader with both foot and hand controls try driving the Case skid loader for a while to see if you like the controls.

Great machines. Have had three and had great service out of all of them. Paid $13k three years ago for our current one which is a 96?? or 98?? model year I think (it is about the last year they made them. You will love it , but your price does seem a bit high for that age. Look at eBay or Machine trader. Lot of them out there.
