Emporia, ks

I'm interested in an 8450 Hesston swather and wondered what should I look at as far as problem areas that might need repaired. It has 3250 hrs on it.

TIA

Sickly drive tight? Not a real expensive area. Rollers worn? If they needs replacing that will be a little over $2k plus your labor. Auger flighting might be getting worn as well if it hasn't been replaced. We usually have to do hours between 2500-3000 hours. It is not horrible to replace. I think they are really good, straightforward machines.

rollers = crimper? How bad do they get before you replace them? Same with the augers?

I think all Hesston 84** series have 3000 hours on them, my 8400 has had 3300 hours since about 1998... Anyway, check for thin metal on the header slide shoes and the slide where the sickle goes into the gaurds, this is a good indication on actual hours (mine are razor thin at about 5000hrs). Check for smooth operation of the header (you should be able to turn the counterweight by hand and not have any 'catches'). Conditioner (crimper) will be getting worn by now; though still functional, they won't crimp as well as new. Check guards, they will effect your quality of cut the most, and can be no fun to change out. Header orbit motor could be getting towards the end of its life, but I don't know how to check that (they are spendy). Another area of concern might be the radiator (is it still open and good shape). I don't know which engine is in that 8450, but look over turbo area and check for leaks or problems (these swathers will use as much horsepower as you can throw at them I think).

These are very solid machines (imho) and hold together very well, and are the top of the heap in cutting ability (again, imho), not significantly different than much newer machines.

it's got the 4bt cummins engine. I just rebuilt one in my skid loader....good engine and easy to work on.....and I'm familiar with them.

The posts have pretty well covered the areas to look at. They are a good straight forward machine and the only problem I ever had was the sickle drive.

The Cummins engine will outlast the rest of the machine. The 8450 has an hour meter as part of the monitor, which is usually a little. More honest than the Hobbs, as it can't be changed out. The guards can't be a concern, we change ours out every year. It only takes less than two hours with an impact gun. I like my crimper to be not very worn as hay drying is important to me

Is there much difference between the early and late model 8450's?

I am not sure of many changes or serial number changes in parts or design from an earlier machine / later machine.

Is a MK12 Sitrex rake too narrow for an 18' swather? It was wide enough to follow my 16' swather.

I bought one today with an 18' header...would have rather had a 16' though. It has 1460 separator hours/1900 hours on the meter.
