WC Indiana
Looking at a Geringhoff corn head. I have trash buildup problems with my present head when I get up to 3-4 mph. Can I run 6-7 mph with a geringhoff? Even in the morning with wet stalks?

Basically I'm asking how well do they feed when the corn is tough?

I think you answered your own question just by asking it

If you're running 7 mph you need a bigger header.

I would like a 12 row head instead of an 8 row, but then I would need 24 row planter, another semi...
The cycle never ends.

My thoughts are now to run the 8 row 5-6 mph with a Case 8120. I just don't want to be slowed down to 3-4 mph by a poor feeding head.

Embarrass WI

When I think of Geringhoff, I think of a Rota-Disc. Are you looking at a Northstar? I bought a used Rota-Disc for this fall and 5-5.5 mph seems to be about the top for me if I want a decent job of cutting the stalks. Did have a few times when the slip clutches would stop a row when the stalks were wetter than they are now. As long as I don't drive too fast, it does a fantastic job on the stalks.

Head is on a 9500 with the feederhouse drive running at 650 rpm.

Without knowing what your present head is, I would say to not expect a dramatic improvement. This is also assuming that we're talking about a RotaDisc type head - there is more than one type of Geringhoff that is made. The Geringhoff is going to pick the cleanest in the morning when the stalks are tough and will have more trash issues in drier conditions. So to your question, you will love it when the stalks are tough - that is as long as your cutting components up front - if installed - are in really good condition. You have to keep these one of two ways to not become frustrated with it, either really good and sharp or not present at all, speaking of the hook knife that is. They feed the best with a tough damp stalk, but that is the most challenging conditions usually for the front cutting components.

You can definitely get that speed out of a new elite series with the integrated crop sweeper. I will agree with previous posters regarding how well you keep corn head maintained as well. My question to you is if you are ging to buy a new head and put a crop sweeper ( down corn reel) on then why not look into a new style corn reel and keep your head fluff free? Hawkins makes nice reel with paddles instead of long pipe fingers.

I was looking at a non-chopping northstar and I presently have a 3408 Case cornhead.

Yes the gerringhoff with the integrated crop sweeper will allow for faster harvest in all conditions. Especially tougher conditions. When in down corn , remove the rubber flaps over the snout and go. The crop sweeper is the key!

I think you could easily run 6 or 7 with a Northstar. I've run that fast with a 6 on a 2388 and an 8 on a 7088:

Northstar will take corn like an old 1083 head in my book. I did find they don't work as well as a 1083 when it is wet. The row units tend to plug at the top of the deck plates. Adjustment of the deck plates does nothing. I could run in similar conditions and never stop before. IF you have a worn out 1083 don't even try to compare.

Take off all the ear savers and feederhouse guard. They are not needed. Picked down corn to 10' tall and never saw a need for the ear savers. There are the leafy trashy varieties of corn that just break off and come in the combine. Not much you can do about them. Otherwise running up to 5.5 with the feederhouse on 400 (JD) is about right. Faster and you would want the rolls pulling a bit faster.

We run a 16r22" Rota Disc on a Lexion 760 and push it all day long at 7 mph. As long as everything is sharp and the head is run fast (800rpm) it can handle the speed just fine.
