Subject: J.D. 6410 vs 6420

N/E Iowa
I'm kinda searching around for a tractor like one of the two mentioned above too replace my 4020 around the yard chores. (Hauling manure, grinding feed, raking hay, mowing hay, loading hay, and running augers) I'm looking for roughly 100 hp, MFD, Loader, cab, and dual hydrualics. Iv'e had a few farmers tell me try too find a 10 series... "The fuel economy is way better than the 20's" . Is there any pro's or con's from one too the other... Like loaders, engine, road speed??

Thanks for any info!! I would like too park the 4020, and find something with more features:)

For your chores, I would seriously look at a low houred used Kubota M125X?
Edit, I just read your name and maybe you only want Green. My neighbors like their 6410, but don't have a loader on it. I think the Kubota is a better loader tractor

If you can stand the slightly larger frame, I'd look for a 7210 over a 6410/20, and we have a 6420. JD640/740 loaders are bullet-proof. Can't speak to the 10 series, but we've had more issues with the 6420 than we've ever had with our 7410 & 7510 in a shorter time. I know the 74/7510s are rated higher, but the 4-banger in the 6420 really struggles to keep up.

Our 6410 has been decent to operate, but it does have some issues. The cooling system is inadequate and we have had major failures in the trans and hydraulic systems, its somewhere around 7000 hours but of course you cant read the dash display anymore.

The 640 loader may be bulletproof but I've sure done a lot of welding on it over the years. Neighbor has a 6420 and its loader has only slightly less extra weld on it than mine.

+1 on the 72/7400's/10, bigger frame, motor is on the low end of its potential power range, getting 100hp out a 6 cylinders and not 4.

For something to replace your tried and true 6 cyl Waterloo tractor I'd look at a 7210 or 7410. The 6000 series are nice for chores and nimble doing loader work but they aren't comparable to your 4020. Finding one with the left hand reverser would be really great for loader work but almost impossible for a reasonable price, these tractors are very reliable and hold there value very well. Mfwd is very nice for loader work but not everyone likes it or can budget that much more for it. Would recommend a 725 or 740 loader depending on front wheel assist or not.

I have a 6420 with over 4000 hours on it. It has been very reliable. Only major problem I have had is the injectors were replaced at 1200 hours. I was not using fuel conditioner all the time and apparently it caused the problem. That could be the case as I started using fuel conditioner religiously after that and have not had problems since. It has the higher level engine with 4 valves per cylinder ( came as part of the IVT package and I think it is very powerful for it's size. It lives it's life doing loader work and burns around 1.4 to 1.7 gallons an hour.

We've got a 6430 premium mfwd power quad. Left hand reverser is nice. We don't have a loader. It spends 90 percent of its time on the arts way 500 grinding hog feed. Had around 100 hours when we bought it and has around 650 now. Zero problems.

6615 or 6715 would be a cheaper alternative. Less features then a 6420 but still a step up from the 4020.

I have a 6420 bought new, now has 1700 hrs. The only issues I've had is a hydraulic leak that required tilting the cab to replace a hose-clamped fitting going into the tranny. I bought a used Woods Loader for it as a friends 640 was Maxed out lifting Bulk bean bags (2500 lbs) The 673 and the new H series (340 ?) is rated higher. Fuel economy is great until you get above 2000 rpms then it drops down quickly. I wish I had a 24 speed with the 25 mph gears so I could road it and still keep the rpms down. I use it to plant, pull wagons, spray and have used it pulling a 22' 496 disc in the field. The short wheelbase makes for a rough ride in the field so an air seat is a must for this use. The 6410 didn't catch on around here so I can't really compare the two. The local service mgr has said the 6400 had tranny problems that the 6410 series addressed

I started with a 6400. It was a stout little tractor, had zero issues with it. Had a 6410. I had to replace the injection pump and spent 3300$ replacing a gear in the tranny. I just bought a new 6430, hopefully it will do as well as the 6400.

The Internet
They are/were popular little tractors here, but the early 10 series are getting old now.

They are plenty heavy duty enough for the power they make, you should have no worries about working them flat out all day long. There are versions of that engine rated at 150hp. The 6 cylinder 6000 series are much the same as the smaller framed 7000 series, just built in Europe with, I assume, the same components. AFAIK the 6400 and the 6 cylinder 6600 have the same transmission.

If you have only ever driven green tractors you will no doubt love it, but there are plenty of competitors tractors that are at least as good. Given the choice between a John Deere 6410 or a 6420, I'd pick a Massey Ferguson 6470 all day long. The Massey really shows Deere how to build a good 4 cylinder tractor.
