Subject: Calmers slow down kit

NW IOWA
Do they really help and are they worth the cost. I need to replace chains and sprockets on my 843 corn head. I put the Calmers chopper rolls on a year ago. They seem to work pretty good but would like a little more chop out of them. Thought speeding the head up some might help. Anybody know what the JD part # for the auger slow down kit is for an 843.

Just a thought from a guy who would like to try calmer products some day. Slower gathering chains means faster rolls which is what your going for right. That will also lead to more butt shelling in my opinion, don't know if calmer deck plates are the answer to this but something tells me no. Just something to think about.

Slowing the gathering chains down by itself won't speed up the rolls.   You have to speed up the whole head to speed up the rolls.

Slowing the chains down relative to the rolls will give the rolls more time to work before the chain lugs shear off the top of the stalk and send it through the combine.

If you speed up the whole head which in turn speeds up the rolls, it can lead to more shelling when conditions are favorable for it to happen.

IMO, if you need new chains and sprockets anyway you have little/nothing to lose and a lot to gain by trying the Calmer sprockets/chains.

Thanks Kooiker, if i remember right your running a 20" Calmer head? Our old JD 643 is getting tired, like to find a used 693 with poly and hydraulic deck plates and add the Calmer kit as needed. Rather not put anymore into 643 but did add new shoup deck plates today for $19 each. Maybe i should have put Calmers on but it's done.

We're running an IH 800 that we narrowed to 20" ourselves.

Has a bunch of Calmer stuff on it though.

The Calmer plates for the JD heads are very similar to IH plates.     I don't know how much they help with the butt shelling.   When corn is bone dry like it was last fall it shells when it hits steel.

I have an 893 head that I put the complete BT chopper kit and slow down gathering chain kit. Calmer wants the output shaft speed at 700 rpm which really speeds everything up. This year I put a 72 tooth sprocket on the auger drive. I had to modify the tightener and trim the edge to fit it in. We will see how it works. Another company that has Everyting for JD heads is Clark Machine, clark SD. and alot cheaper than JD. JD also offers a 70 tooth #50 sprocket but its 270.00 I paid 150 for my 72 tooth from clark for my #60 sprocket. I run Twin rows and with the Calmer slowdown kit you end up with a 9 tooth Idler sprocket which moves the gathering chain in way to much for my twins, so I modified the Idler arm and offset them 1.5" I need a wide window for my twin to get up and into the roller area. Yes, last year in Dry corn you end up slowing the head way down to save the corn, I'm waiting to see how it works in wetter corn this year. What did you think of the chopping rolls? I wasn't impressed, did ok at 4 mph, I usually run at 5.

Clark Machine sell the slow down kit also Small sprocket on the drive end then a regular idler up front , They use a smaller gathering chain .

I have put the kits on 2 1293 jd heads one from calmer and the last one from Clark . Didn't really notice any difference in running either larger or smaller idler ,Clark is a lot cheaper than Calmer though.

When we had an 893, we ran the gathering chain slow down kit. Besides helping with the "fluff" aspect, it greatly improved gathering chain wear/life. It was worth for that part alone to me. We put the tapered deck plates on it the last year we ran it. I don't know if I would do that over again.
