Our 20+ year old pick up transfer tank pump gave up today. It was a vane type. Local TSC has GPI gear pumps. 15 gpm rating. Good? Bad? Don't know that we've ever had a gear fuel pump.

You might want to tear down the old one. The outside of the motor is a round(tube shaped) permanent magnet. The pump I have once had the magnet break. The pieces locked the shaft up. Replaced the magnet for peanuts compared to a new pump, even then and that was probably 25 years ago. Its at least 35 years old now and still on the job. I never have had to replace the blades in all those years, but even that is a simple job.
I think the gear pumps are just as reliable.

We've got 3 of the Fill-Rite (vane) pumps and one of the GPI (gear) pumps. They're both OK as far as electric pumps go, but I like the screen on the GPI better, it's much easier to clean if needed. One thing I have noticed is that the vane pumps seem to prime better on gasoline than the gear pump. We've never had much trouble priming on diesel. It might be my imagination, but the GPI seems like it pumps a little faster than the comparable Fill-Rite.

As far as replacing parts, the GPI replaced a Gasboy that bit the dust. To buy everything it needed, it would have been over $200 plus shipping. The new GPI was $260.

That all said, our next service rig we set up (hopefully this winter) will have a hydraulic driven pump. In our experience, if the pump is rated at 15 GPM, you are lucky to get 10 out of it.

Is this something you can buy, or are you going to have to make your own? I have had absolutely no luck with the 12v fuel pumps, but by the other responses I may have been unlucky. I would be interested in more information on a hydraulic pump.

I don't know if there's anything available, I'm counting on making my own. I'll keep ya posted on what we come up with.

We tore the old one down yesterday. Vanes looked worn, reversed them with no luck. Motor runs fine, just a trickle of fuel. Put a different filter and hose on (thought the hose may have collapsed). Had a 115 v Gasboy do the same thing a few years ago, thought the pump case was worn out as well. Plan is to install a new pump, rebuild the old one for spare. We'll store the rebuilt one in such a fashion that we'll never be able to find it when needed if history repeats itself. I like the idea of being able to clean the screen easier. Our tank is nestled right into the pick up where its impossible to do anything without running fuel all over. I have GPI chem pumps, they seemed to be as good as anything else.

I don't know where the capacity ratings on any of the pumps come from. I was looking at a 25 gpm pump hoping to get 15. They get real proud of those pumps, and ususally we're servicing equipment while we fuel anyways. Don't know if a $600 pump is needed.

I bought one of the gpi 25 gpm pumps and I am impressed. Vehicle must be running when running it as the extra voltage makes it pump much faster. I think that it puts out over 20 gpm in actual use when lifting from truck to combine fuel tank. Pump is very heavy and well built. Way more pump than my 15 gpm gpi that I was using.

Worth the $600, just depends how much you use it.

Pat,

If your looking at GPI pumps or others for that matter take a look at this site and all that is available.

www.jmesales.com

Especially check out the re-packaged pumps. Which I believe have been returned and gone through. Quite a bit cheaper than anything I've seen at TSC if your willing to chance being gone through and they carry a 1 year warranty

http://www.jmesales.com/item/108255/Repackaged-GPI-12V-Transfer-Pump-w-Manual-Nozzle.aspx

I've got a 12volt GPI on a pickup transfer tank that has been on there for 20 years. Only thing I've done to it is replaced the o-ring on the check valve.

I've also bought 3 of the re-packaged 110 volt GPI pumps through JME Sales. I've been well satisfied with them and the pumps for my needs.
