South Central Wisconsin
Was wondering what the inside of everyones shop looked like and how they had it set up. Were looking to build a 60 x 130 shed with a 60 x 60 heated portion. Right now the plan is to have a 8x 12 utility are with a sink and coat hanger, etc. A place to take the manure covered clothes off and not drag it everywhere in the shop. Attached we would have a 12 x 12 office and a 6x6 bathroom with a 6x6 open space behind for the heat manifolds (in floor heat) and pressure tank. Along the side of this area we would have a set of stairs and everything above the bathroom, office and utility area would be lofted. If this makes sense...ha.

Just curious how everyone else had their shops set up. Pictures would be awesome.

I have been using google sketchup to design it. It really is an awesome tool, just takes some time to get used to the program as I am not familiar with auto cad or any other design programs.

Thanks in advance!

Another good web site to use is FBI Buildings. They have a really good building design program for free on their website. I have spent a lot of time designing our new shop. Here is the link;

Personally I would either build an area attached to the building either via lean too or hip roof with 10 foot walls. We started out with a 16x16 addition for a small office and restroom, then we decided to add room for the geotherm/HVAC/water heaters so we went to 20x20. Then we thought it would be handy to have a small kitchen and it grew to 30x30. Then we added space for parts storage and it grew to 40x30. I am stairs adverse so I won't recommend a loft after having one for 30 years. Plus loft space is open and subject to all the dust and dirt that gets blown around in a shop, especially if you have the doors open all summer.

Agree with lookingglass, would add on side of building, rooms fill up with things you never think about, tables, chairs, computer, fridge, microwave, closet,kids toys, and other things quicker than you think. 12 x12 room is very small with a table and chairs. Just a thought, but bigger is better in the long run for all the unexpected.

I agree with looking glass on the shorter ceiling area but i wouldn't build a off building for working area, build a loft and use the space above and below, if you want to build walls upstairs so stuff doesn't get dusty but you have to remember, if there is dust it is going somewhere.

Some picture of our loft and shop so far, it's a work in progress. Loft is only 7' but widens at the back for bathroom and office area.

I don't mean to be critical, but what are you going to do when that faucet needs replaced?

They won't need to be replaced although agtalkers are very critical of that feature. Iowa hydrants are very high quality, still going strong in old shop being the only water source in building. We plan on plumping hot and cold water so will use that when possible but this for if building is ever unheated.

We swear by Iowa hydrants. They hold up to sulfur water surprisingly well. We have one outside on the sulfur well and it lasted 35 years before we had to replace it. It still worked but it leaked.

I see.

But knowing me I would leave the hose wrapped around something and drive off, bending the whole faucet and ruining it.... I know me, because I have done that before!

Nice Shop and thanks for the pictures! How big is your office area? I'm just trying to get an idea of how big we want to make it. Its always hard to tell until you build it and I'm sure it will fill up fast...as they always do. As long as we have room for a fridge full of beer!

You speak about office size so i though i would share. Office is going to be 12'x16' I want 12'x24' dad and granddad want 12'x12 so we setting on 12'x16' This is going to be on top of the loft, above the bathroom and utility room. Utility room and bath room are 16'x8' total area although they are going to be separate. Utility room will have all floor heat stuff, washer and dryer, sink, hot water heater, and pressure tank. Bath room will have shower, toilet, urinal, and sink. Office is going to have kitchen area, kitchen table, sitting area, desk/meeting area.

I think we are going to go with a 12x18 office and bathroom area where the bathroom will 6x5 with just a toilet and sink. I can't talk him into a shower even though we raise heifers for a living so a shower would be nice to clean up after long mornings of moving cattle. And then we are thinking of a 12x8 open area with a sink and the manifolds and pressure tank. The whole loft area would be 12x26. We changed it after my original post so that we could have a few more feet of office space to tuck a stove and refrigerator in the back corner. This way there is still adequate room.

our office is 16 x 32. Under the stairs to the loft is a closet that has our compressor and waterheater ect. i wish we would have put the office windows lower. when your sitting at the desk or table and someone pulls in you have to stand up to see. it would be nice to have them a foot lower.
