Any you guys doing ET's as a Coop herd. Putting in embryos for other people in your cows? I'm needing to renegotiate my contract for upcoming year, want to be fair in charging the guys but with calf prices the way they are I'm not sure what's fair? I put in embryos to calve Jan - Feb - Mar in Iowa, owner picks them up August, I have all sync costs and feed for cows & calves including creep, they pay all ET costs (embryo & transfers). Curious if any of you are doing this or paying to have it done.
Thanks,

$1000 per live calf. Make it worth your time. I have the same situation as you. Been putting in more every year. If you have a good relationship with the cooperator and the calves are high dollar deals try 50/50 if they are to be sold. Works well for us and gives the guy calving the cows extra incentive.

over the avg top of your local calf market.

Some exporters (processor / feeders) are now contracting speciality genetic calves for $25 cwt over the local market top at weaning.
for the 013 crop, and just use spec breed bulls, no ai, no et, no bse.

I know a guy here that has the same implanting, calving, and pick up dates as you, and the owner was paying $900./calf.
They were for a large Ohio & Kansas reg angus operation. The embryoligist had clubby people wanting recip herds also. After seeing the figures from their last bull sale I think the coop herds should get X2 $ from last year.

We get 50 dollars for every cow we set up, 100 dollars extra for each pregancy and another 100 dollars for each calf weaned. For each calf weaned we get market price plus 250 dollars. They pay all the vet costs, we pay for the creep and all the shots we give the calves. If they don't want one of the calves we still get the 250 dollars. It must work for him they put more embryos in every year.

Thanks Guys for the replies. I guess I'm thinking my time and efforts are worth more than that for next couple years? Heck, ET preg rates are 55 -70% versus 80 -90 % AI or bull bred so that is disadvantage for doing ET's. Calving in normal Iowa winters in Jan & Feb especially can be super challenging some nights preventing frozen ears etc. These guys have some of the best cattle in business, great cattle and great people but I working for them for too little I'm thinking? Heck, good chance we'll get $1.70 + for 600# calves this fall, that's $1020/ head, why would I do this for $900 - $1000? Guess lets say I'm not doing it for 900 -1000. I've been getting that 5 yrs ago, that was a premium then, it's not anymore, that's my point. I have people wanting way more slots than I have every year, there has to be a delicate balance for both parties, just not sure where that is in today's cattle business? I need to get paid well for my extra efforts but not gouge them either.
Thanks,

to mention. The half of your cows that do not take an embryo, end up breeding 30 days late.

So you end up with your half the calves at 70 to 100 lbs light. ie 30 days of calf growth.

Say 75 lbs x $2 lb = $150 per cow expense in lost calf wt opportunity.

That's correct Mark, that was my point of mentioning the 55% -70 with ET's versus 80 -90% AI or bull bred for your exact comment.
No arguement here.

Frank why couldnt a guy ask for the season high hundred weight price at pickup time and a set price on cows that didn't take to offset late calves, i'duno just brainstormin with you ? that way you get to keep you relationship going and they can still count on you , this seems fare to me , i have eggs frozen that keep on having birthdays i got to do somthing myself, my emb, guy sells you his bred com heifer once she takes your egg, i dont want my ET calf raised by a heifer if i have a choice though.

Probably a option? I prefer to stay away from the discussions of "what is" the current market or what was the high that week type stuff. I like them knowing as well as me what the bill is per live calf. So your guy puts in embryos and if she sticks you buy recip safe with calf? If it's any of my business whats he charge for that? Depending on what eggs you have to put in I'd hate to use a heifer in a lot of cases, and what if the heifer he sells you is just a heifer nothing special that won't raise a decent calf of her own next time, what good does that do you? Thanks for the ideas.
Trans Ova does something similar to that but usually with IVF stuff, not sure what they charge now?

last time i checked was about five years ago and he was using big sim x angus heifers, and some 4 yearolds the cattle were good quality out of his old school sim herd and at that time it was $1500 with your egg inside.

I am looking for someone that might do some edit coop with me. If someone is interested feel free to call or email me. We run polled herefords, what a lot of people are doing here is the cow owner pays for the transfer, weighs, and weans the calf. The embryo owner buys all calves born at a $300 premium. There are some people that charge more, and some charge a $50 per cow set up and then a $300 premium but you get to choose the calves you want to buy back. I am open to anything that might be available. I don't have huge numbers to do.
