Subject: New Holland 216


Hey everyone, I'm looking at getting a bigger hay rake and I came across a new holland 216 double basket hay rake. I was wondering if anyone knows about them or used one? thanks

Great rakes for smooth ground. They don't hold up like Allen, Twinstar, or Vermeers.

Pasco WA.		At one time I had 3 NH 216 rakes, before I went to Twinstar. The NH is more difficult to adjust, but not bad once you get the hang of it. New Holland builds the best basket and Twinstar builds the best frame. The NH hydraulic system also works better with the exception of not being able to make adjustments on the go. If your moving up from something smaller the NH 216 will be just fine.

Northern CA		As said, the 216 overall isn't regarded as well as the Allen or Twinstar. In my are, some of the 216 rakes have gotten really cheap. I have seen good rakes for $7500 or a little less. $7500 won't buy a good Allen or Twinstar. My advice, if your budget is on the low side, a 216 will be worlds better than where you are coming from, but if you want to spend in the $12000+ range, get something else.

Bonanza, Or		They are a decent rake and do a good job but they are not built as heavy for rough ground. They are easy for people to run because you run them out to where you have stops set and leave them. You will not be able to change any of the settings on the go like the Allen or the Twinstar. Like the pervious posts I agree that the NH has the best baskets and do a clean job. Look the frame over well and see how many welds it has on it.

Huntley Montana		Best baskets I have seen on any basket rake is the Vemeer baskets. I have owned R23, 2300,2800 Vermeers, 851/852 & 8827 Allens, 216 NHs, & currently own 2 Allens & 2 2800 Vermeers. The Vermeer is way better built basket than any other I have seen. The ONLY reason I keep the Allens around is IF I have to flip windrows for the small balers I can do 2 at a time without putting the windrows together.

Northern CA		You just said why I can't use a Vermeer. We rake abou 1/3 of our hay as singles, where don't combine the rows but leave a two foot gap between the rows.

Northern CA		The 216 will do fine in heavy hay. All of my comments above transfer to the heavy hay issues as well. It is nice to be able to adjust the Allen and the Twinstars on the move, but for the money a 216 will do well.
