Subject: 6 row JD 7000 planter marker actuator not working...

Caldwell County Kentucky
Friend has purchased a 1981 John Deere 7000 6 row 30" planter with automatic markers.

One side will let down the other will not. We took out the actuator. The big spring is broke, but looks functional. We guess the sping is just a cushion spring. Looks like to us that the two flat metal pieces in beside the hyd. cylinder is the problem. The little sping that looks like it should alternate back and forth is intact. It's all clean.

When the hyd. cylinder goes to one side or the other, it seems it's not catching the hook ends to pull it. We guess by pulling the hook piece it pulls the other flat metal piece to one side to over center it to become the stop for the other side.

We do not have an owners manual yet.

The pic points to the flat metal pieces.

What should we do?

Thanks.

That to me is the worst part of those planters, and sometimes they will quit in the middle of the season. All I have ever done is clean them good and lube them up, but they still are a real pain. Most of the time their is a mouse nest in them.

mine works great ... just make sure u replace the spring clean it up well and when u adjust the lift cables make sure u remove all the slack out of them ...also the marker lock up plates on each arm when using it flip it over to use the cousion side when it comes up so it will not slam hard on the planter chassis .... i got an operaters manuel and yes its is a big help ...should enjoy it for a long time....IHSMOKE

i bought a 8r 7000 wing fold. one side had the actuator
the other side had a length of c-channel and hydraulic
cylinder. we copied that side and made the cylinders
double action purchased a sequencing valve. plumbed it
up and everything worked great!

good luck!

To switch sides it has to get the side its lifting all the way up. Can't bang against the stop before the cylinder is done pulling. And even if the lift cylinder is double acting (it doesn't need to be) if you don't get the pressure down far enough it won't change direction. The lift cylinder is single acting.

My old 7000 was so worn in the square slot and the hooks that I had to build it up and grind square again, worked flawless after that. I think that broken spring needs to be intact.
