Subject: Tractor Chain measurements

United States
Where can I find measurements of farm tractor chains in ft. and inches for comparable tire sizes. Have a set of chains that measure 20" x 120" and would like to know what tire size they will fit. Also, need chains to fit 16'9 x 38" What would correct dimensions be? I have calculated 24" x 132" but would like some verification. Seems like there should be a chart showing this somewhere but my searches have not found any. Appreciate any help.

Yes, they tend to be rated by tire size, not chain dimensions.

You could start with a piece of baler twine (or chain) 20 or 24" long. Drape it over the tire with the ends hanging down the same on both sides of the tire. Measure the distance to the axle center. That's the radius of a circular side chain, that radius times 2 pi (6.28) is the minimum length of the side chains for that length cross chain. You probably want 4 to 6" more length on the side chains. I have a set of chains I ought to do that to. Last time I had them on the MF-135 they were hard to get tight. I think maybe I should prune them to fit, maybe loosing one cross chain to make them easier to handle and to maybe not need bunge cords crosswise to get them tight.

Or, forget the twine or chain. Just use a tape to measure from the middle of the tire tread over the side of the tire to the axle center. Subtract half the chain width. That's the chain radius and compute from there.

www.firestoneag.com has rolling circumference for all their tires on their website. click where it says "tirefinder" Should get you at least close to what you need for length.
