Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning. | For those interested in getting the spindle perpendicular to the table on a drill press, this will come close. Most drill presses have an angle adjustment on the table in the X-axis. I've never seen one that's adjustable in the Y but you can use this rig to at least check.
First thing is a 20d nail bent about like thus:
 Angle isn't critical.
Then chuck the short leg in your drill chuck and adjust it so you can check the gap with a feeler Gauge: Then turn the spindle so the leg extends to the other side and again check with the feeler gauge When you have the same gap on each side, the table will be perpendicular to the spindle. Adjust as required and keep checking until you're satisfied for your needs.
There is a margin of error with this method, as you do end up going by feel when using the gauge. I use a different setup for tramming my mill. It consists of a bracket with adjustable arms that let me extend so I take a swing that encompasses the full depth of the table, and I also use a DTI to more precisely measure the clearances. With enough patience, a guy can adjust much closer than my needs for accuracy. Of course, you need to do left, right, front, & back to fully tram the mill. I also use the same bracket and DTI to make sure the vise jaws are perfectly parallel to the movement of the table in the X-axis.
