I am looking for a 9 shank chisel, came across a couple 6500's that seem reasonable. This would be occaisional use, filling tile ditches, the odd field here and there, etc... I haven't had a chance to look at either one, are they a good machine? Heavy enough? Anything else? Thanks, Ben

By the way, if you have something that may fit my application, feel free to email with details.

I owned a 9 shank 6500 for several years. Biggest problems I had with it was breaking the bearing flanges on the front discs fron the side to side motion of the discs when working cornsyalks on an angle. Finally found a bearing with a heavier flange & pretty much eliminated the problem. Also twisted the main rockshaft. IH didn't put grease zerks on the bottom hold downs, just on the top. I think newer models had zerks I drilled & put zerks in the bottom hold downs & didn't have the problem again. I think newer models had zerks top & bottom so you might want to check.

Other than that they were about as good as any disc chiesel of that time period.

Thanks guys. Will see what happens. No breaks in the weather, will maybe be in touch with you about spacing if I get ahold of one. Ben

Croswell, Michigan
I had one for a year or two. No matter how I set it it wanted to plug. Sold it and bought a Deere 714 and haven't had a problem since.

We ran ours in stalks where corn had made 175-200bpa without discing & had little plugging problems. One thing I discovered, & failed to mention in my previous post, was that the way CIH had the shanks arranged wasn't the best. I suspect your's plugged at the shanks by the wheels. I rearranged mine using the settup diagrahm from a Brillion 3 bar disc ripper which moves those shanks away from the wheels giving more clearance.

I don't know the model # but neighbors had a 3 bar JD disc chiesel , purchased about the same time I bought the 6500, & they always had to disc their stalks.

6500's were good for their time, as good as anything else out there. THe common problem witht the was not enough trash clearance in very heavy residue - but at the time they were mfged, 200+ bushel corn wasn't very common.
The next generation was the 6650 -
Glencoe had similar models also - may consider one of them?
Most 6500's are in the $3000 dollar range. . .  .
There are some bushhog models out there in that price range that have more clearance, If I recall - 5000 series numbers
