Subject: Opinions on IH 3688?

Owensville, MO
Thinking about upgrading my 966 to something a little newer with a cab. Will be used mainly as planting tractor, 800 8RN cyclo, fertilizer buggy, and brushhogging (15 ft.) Need to stay under $18,000 so good newer tractors are out. 966 does everything I need so I would think a 3688 would be that much better. I understand that it is a glorified 986 with some better creature comforts.

Thanks guys

Joe

Hi - you're right: it's a re-skinned 986 with an electric TA made/part of the range gear as the biggest difference. Same engine as the 986 too. The cab lay-out is updated from the 86 series.

They made a little over 20,000 966's (1971 to 1976) and over 20,000 986's (1976 to 1981), but only about 2,500 3688's (1981 to 1985). When I went looking for one of these three (I ended up buying a late model 986), there were just a lot more 966 or 986's to chose from - simply a numbers thing! The few 3688's I found, were very well used, so I didn't go that way. If you can find a clean/straight 3688, you'll have no worries. However, if you have a hard time finding one, perhaps a late model 986 (1981: known as the 'red panel' or 'tri-stripe') may be an option as here are a few mechanical and other upgrades to the earlier models that may work for you, that was later incorporated into the 3x88 series. Good luck!

If a cab is not a must have, I bought an 8300 hour 5240 mfwd open station last winter for less than $18000. It does have a rollbar with canopy and I would just as soon be in the fresh air most of the time.

We have a 6588 2+2 (same rear end/cab) you will like the Electric TA and Right hand shifting. WE also have a 1086 that runs the Planter (800 cyclo 8 row) and does it just fine, took over for the 756 gasser with Afte market cab. A nice quite cab sure is nice at the end of the day.

Tennessee
You need to find you a White 100 or 120. It's not red, but it's a whole lot more tractor with a whole lot better cab, and you won't have to spend but $15,000 for a good one.
