| Hi - you're right: it's a re-skinned 986 with an electric TA made/part of the range gear as the biggest difference. Same engine as the 986 too. The cab lay-out is updated from the 86 series.
They made a little over 20,000 966's (1971 to 1976) and over 20,000 986's (1976 to 1981), but only about 2,500 3688's (1981 to 1985). When I went looking for one of these three (I ended up buying a late model 986), there were just a lot more 966 or 986's to chose from - simply a numbers thing! The few 3688's I found, were very well used, so I didn't go that way. If you can find a clean/straight 3688, you'll have no worries. However, if you have a hard time finding one, perhaps a late model 986 (1981: known as the 'red panel' or 'tri-stripe') may be an option as here are a few mechanical and other upgrades to the earlier models that may work for you, that was later incorporated into the 3x88 series.
