Central NC, Rowan County
Are these decent grain carts? I did a search and it didn't turn up anything. I assume that it is a 500 bushel cart. What are the weak points and what should I look for when I check it out? Thanks for any input, good or bad.

We had a 500 a long time ago and seems like we put two gear boxes on it and never wore out the first set of augers. I would probably look for something different. JMO

We have one. Its a big pile of junk. I would like to fill it with scrap iron, take it to the scrap yard, and pull the pin.

They have baby tires. The rims are weak. The hinge on the auger is the biggest problem. The cylinder that controls the auger fold is too small, and cannot control the speed that the auger folds down. It usually ends up slamming itself down. The cylinder isn't strong enough to lock the auger up, usually ends up leaking grain.

I'd like to sell you ours if you were closer.

guess Ill be the odd ball here I love mine , it has 23.1-26 tires and extensions it will hold over 600 bushell. Had to take the gear box apart and reseal it last fall was fairly easy job and all parts are avalable. I like how well it empties out less than 1/4 of a 5 gal bucket. I put restictors in the line for the auger fold and slowed it down quiet a bit. I also built an adjustable spout made it a lot easier for unloading.

We have a UFT 500 (same thing only orange) and don't have any problems. I know it's not as nice as new but it's a heck of a lot better than the UFT 400 bu we had and a not near as expensive as the new ones. Wouldn't be afraid of another one just like it.

I agree, I think mine was one of the best buys I've made thus far. For under 5K it does the same thing that one costing 4 times as much does.

4640 - Do you happen to have pictures of the inside linkage for the gate indicator? I'd like to modify mine to have that this summer.
I like your hydraulic chute - I modified my "factory rubber flap" this summer and it acts more like yours in that I gained a good foot or more of reach with the corn coming out. Helps stay away from the trailer more compared to the first year.

Mine is a early model United Farm Tools in orange - you can tell by the flanged axles vs extension tubes on the later ones (JD green ones were all the later design).

I have the larger tires like 4640, only in bar tread, they trail perfectly down 30" rows. I too had a 18" extension when I bought it two seasons ago, I ended up shortening the combine side as I didn't have enough clearnance if I hit a tile line - too close for comfort then. there is a 2x8 on that side now and I have plenty of clearance.

In high moisture corn like 2 years ago (30%), there may be 15 bushels or so that won't clean out without a shovel inside (it's fully caged). Not a big deal to me though, I just cleaned it out once a day. under 5 bushels left with the dry corn and beans this year.

The hinge is a weak point IF the auger is hit. Had a friend run it once and he rubbed the side of the semi a bit, bent the hinge pin and corn leaked out, vice grip on the joint and it ran the rest of the day fine. New pin made by welding shop and put in the next day and it was good to go, all it is is a 1/2 or 5/8" rod with a pair of roll pins at the top and bottom - so easy to fix. The place where the two auger halfs meet I have a strip of 1/2" weather stripping foam tape stuck onto one of the surfaces. There is NO leakage from that joint for me with that arrangement.

I always start the pto at low speed with the gate closed, and close the gate and clean out the auger before shutting it back down again at idle. The other tip is I ALWAYS change the gearbox oil before each season as that takes care of any moisture thats infiltrated over the summer / winter. Nature of the gearbox location and seal arrangement for mositure to accumulate.

All in all, I am very pleased with the unit's performance. It's allowed my old 1460 to be more productive in a given day then a combine 10-15 years newer that's unloading on the ends only.

Thanks!

That will be a easy fabrication for this summer, and a nice improvement.
If the rear view mirror on the tractor is just right, I can see the stock indicator ok, but if it's bumped I can't.

Good afternoon 260 AR. I am very interested in your home built indicator. I have an old J500 and I would like to put something on like you did. Would you have a general list of materials and sizes that you used that you could share information with me?

Thanks
Steve

I think they are an ok cart also.  They can usually be found for a decent price.  I think the biggest problem area for them was the gearbox.  You need to change oil on it every year no matter how much or little it gets used.  They will hold a nice 500 bushels without running over and can be pulled with a 4440 size tractor.

Kind of a pain really, ran one for many many years and it seemed like we were putting a gearbox in every other (if not every single) year. Auger always leaked corn at the joint no matter what... But it did move grain i guess.

Edit: Just incase anybody is wondering, anybody that ran the cart always started the auger empty and at idle so the gearboxes were not being abused. Use to get gearbox oil but when that wasnt working we just pumped it full of cornhead grease a couple times a season and that seemed to help alot (3 to 4 years a gearbox).

There's better out there, i'd say keep looking.

I've had one for 27 years. Rebuilt it a couple of times. Rebuilt the gear box 3 times. Not the best but not the worst. Some of the same problems as other guys but they're fixable. It's gotten the job done for years & didn't cost $30,000.

4640, yours looks really nice. Wish mine looked that good !!

We had gearbox issues on ours too. Gotta make sure the auger is balanced and aligned perfectly. We had to shim our gearbox a little so that the shaft the auger slides onto was squared up to the hole.

I thought I had a bunch of pics of the indacater inside the cart but I can't find them. I made it and its pretty simple, it will be a couple of months but when I can get it out of shed I will take some and post them. Its clear in the back with
tarp un rolled rigt now. I don't understand everyones problem with gear boxes I've hade this one over 10 years and other than it leaking (which it did when I bought it ) I have never had any trouble. That being said after tearing it apart
I would say it is on the light side. Take care of it and like anouther poster said make sure everything is lined up right and youll be fine. Never had any problem with the hinge, and I dont have the saftey cage in the bottom so im guessing
thats why it cleans out better than anyone elses. Also we never harvest any thing over 16% so that makes a diff also, thanks 4640

One last question (sorry for the thread hijack)

Where were you able to source the windows you cut into the front of the cart?

Thanks.

I cut the holes out with plasma cutter then traced them out with cardboard then took to the local glass shop and they cut them out and sold me the rubber seal. Think the glass was about $30 a piece and rubber seal couple bucks a foot. If you don't have accses to a plasma I think you could use a die grinder and cut off wheel.
