Subject: Cat engine question, D333 engine

Somerville, Indiana
Neighbor has a grader almost bought, needs to know if a D333 is similar to a 3306...I am thinking it is an early model of the 3306 with a large turbo, about the size of a bucket....Later then came the 3306 without a turbo, then shortly afterwards the 3306 with a turbo...Grader is a Cat 120, is advertised with D333 engine...He needs to know if Cat generators or D6 engines are similar=will fit...Grader engine is tired.

Thanks.

sw corner ia.
I believe they are very similar PC motors, and also think that the 333 was in D610K hhp, also 7F's used as well. Looks same as 3306, parts all look like they are in same place, I do not know what interchanges.

Yes I think they are fairly similar engines. Some cats with the 333 engines had them replaced with 3306s later. On the D6C cats 1973/74 was when they switched to the 3306 engine from the 333 at least on the model we have because it is one of the first with the 3306.

Does your 6C have a turbo?..They didn't for a while in that time frame.

The d333 has a cast alum valve cover instead of stamped metal if its late enough to be a d333c it will look alot like a 3306. Also different style front timing cover and water pump on the d333

Yes it does have a turbo but it did not come from the factory with the one it has. I thought they came with a turbo, just a different one than ours has. The difference may be though that I am talking about a 17R D6C which is an SA ag cat and straight out of the factory they had more HP than a dozer model among other things so the turbo may have just been on the ag cats at the time. The turbos were very common add ons for all the models of older ag cats before they started from the factory.

I know they were using 3306 engines in the D5 cats starting in the late 60's.
