Subject: Deere ATU

South Carolina
I am considering putting a precision system on a John Deere 8100 and going with a Deere ATU steering system. I assume I will not need a steering valve added but will only need a receiver and display. Questions: How accurate is the ATU compared to a steering valve and what other hardware such as cables, etc will I need? Any other input is appreciated.

I think you willbe happy. The ATU is not as accurate as the steering valve but good enough. The display will need the activation, and you will need the wiring harness and bracket kit.

depends on your use.. our 200? atu kept overheating and kicking out on an 8200 on rough ground with sf1.
left it in the 2388 and bought the steering valve, no problem. I also hated hitting my sore knee with the motor!!!!!

Atu works ok for us here. We use it on the combine for bean harvest and on the hagie sprayer for pre spray in all crops and post spray in drilled beans.

We been using a ATU 200 for 3 years on our 8100 it works really good, we use it for planting and seeding. We also have ATU's on our Buhler Versitiles. Make sure you get the ATU 200 though.

If the tractor is not GreenStar ready you will need one of two harnesses.

PF90252 - This is the GreenStar Ready Harness for 8x00, 8x10 and 8x20 tractors. This harness also includes the ISO connector for mounting on the back of the tractor. That will come in handy if you ever want to pull a new planter with it.

PF90420 - This is a generic harness that can be used just for guidance.

An ATU will work just perfect in your tractor. I have setup and used several of them. Of course the ATU isnt as accurate as an integrated valve, but they do a nice job, are cheaper, and give you flexibility. A valve for a tractor would be around 5 or 6 thousand. The ATU is 2 thousand and can pretty much be moved to anything.

Here are a few options and prices

Alot of the cost depends on what signal accuracy you want, which depends on what you want to do with your system. SF1 is guranteed within 10 inches, however it runs alot closer than that, for $5500 more SF2 is guaranteed with 4 inches and prolly runs closer to 2 inches. If youre looking for repeatibility, then you could go RTK, which is sub inch, for an extra $4300 on top of that. Also, the 1800 display is for autotrac only, meaning if you are wanting to yield map or document anything, a larger more expensive screen is needed, the 2630. Let me know your equipment and what you would like to do with your system throughout the year. My cell is 815-252-3927

This is honestly about the cheapest way to go for just autotracking. I would call this the universal tillage system. Its fairly cheap but very easy.
1800 Display $1695
SF1 Activation $3000
SF1 Starfire 3,000 $2695
ATU 200 $1995
Brackets and Harnesses $700

Here is a more expensive system, but will allow for documentation or yield mapping.
2630 $5895
SF2 Activation $6500
SF2 Starfire 3,000 $4695
ATU 200 $1995
Greenstar Harness and Brackets for 8000 $1100
