Subject: Waste oil furnace fuel problem

I filled the furnace oil tank sunday night and now the furnace won't stay lit. I pumped some diesel that had some water in it, and let the barrel sit outside so the water would freeze at the bottom. Since then I haven't been able to keep the furnace running without problems. It acts like it has low fuel pressure. I have cleaned the nozzle tip twice, reset the igniter, cleaned the fuel filter and played with the adjustments. The only way I can get this fuel to burn is crank up the fuel pressure to 6-8 psi. The book calls for 2.75 psi. Does anyone have any suggestions, it almost seems that this diesel just doesn't want to burn .

Eastern Iowa
Sounds like you have a restriction after the pump. If you are really spraying that much more fuel into the fire box the fuel air mixture would be very rich and the smoke very black. If it will light set the fuel pressure and air pressure to get a proper size and color of flame, check the exhaust for proper appearance, (mine is no visible smoke) and make sure your chimney is not to hot.

It does seem to be lacking fuel because at the right pressure there is not enough flame to stay lit. I was looking in the book this morning and it appears that there is a strainer in the pump after the filter so I guess I will be taking that apart. EDD I am running a Lanair and have played around with the gap and nozzle so I think that aspect is fine. This unit is new this year and worked fine till I put this new batch of fuel in it. My other unit has 4 seasons on it and all I have done is change the filter and reset the igniter gap on it so I haven't had very many issues over the last 4 years.

Does the tank have a drain plug or valve on the bottom. I piped in a ball valve and drain the water off about once a week. Even with good oil it seems condensation from sitting over the summer will build up. When the furnace is running the oil/water mix is stirred up and will cause my lanair to surge and seem to loose pressure for a few seconds.

After several calls and doing checks that the factory service reps said to check I drove up to the factory and picked up a new preheater assembly. They said that some contaimination from the preheater flaking off could be plugging the nozzle. So far so good.

The pre heaters needs to be turned off if furnace is not going to be used for extended amounts of time they may plug up.
