Subject: Vermeer Baler Questions - Rancher or SM


NW Missouri		Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade my baler this year. Right now I have the economy Vermeer Rebel 5500. I like the 5.5x5 bale but I really want to go with Net this year. The new Rancher has Net and a 5.5x5 bale and the Super M has the full size 6x5, etc.

Got the quotes from the dealer and I can get the Rancher 665 for ~31K and the bigger 605 Super M for ~38K. I'll have to get a bigger tractor as my biggest right now is a Farmall 105U w/90 PTO HP if I get the SM. I like the bigger bales as I have to transport all of my hay 16 miles to the cow farm. Any opinions on the Rancher versus Super M?

I put up about 500-600 bales a year.

Eastern Nebraska		I think you will be happier with the SM. Resale value will be a big factor if you ever decide to sell. There was a Rancher at a local farm show a while back and it looked a little on the cheap side.

NW Missouri		Thanks, If I go up to the Super M, what's a good tractor for that baler? I'm open to all colors but have red now.

northwest tennessee		Are you sure the 90 hp will not pull it?

Sumner GA, Located in southwest GA,		That kinda like asking who makes the best truck, hear everything under the sun. Specifics. $$$ to spend. Personally I would say a good cheap 1086 is plenty, but.... Big question is whether the amount of hay justifies the pricier baler. I really couldn't tell you based on the origional post, things like whether resale or run it into the ground, custom baling, and the like. Not real sure where the extra cost is justified for 600 bales yr but who am I to say.

NW Missouri		Joshua, You're right it's hard to justify for 600 bales, but I'm growing my operation and expect that to go higher each year as I add cows / acres / custom. I was looking for ideas on new model tractors around 110 PTO HP, etc.

WY, OK		If you have 90hp turbo'd it should work. We use a JD 7200 to pull ours, works just fine. I'd hope that $38K is for every option, if it is everything but the scale and moisture monitor it should be under $35K for a SM. Remember you can make the bales any size you want in that SM we made quite a few 5x5's last year with ours.

NW Missouri		Yeah, I figured it would handle it, but a bit more weight/HP would probably help on my hills. The 5500 with a full bale gives it a work out sometimes.

That 38K is cash and doesn't include moisture or scale so it sounds I need to shop around a bit.

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State		I bought a new 605 SM last summer $29,000 twine tie and for another $4500.00 could have had the net. Get the bigger baler and make the bales alittle smaller if you like, brother has the smaller Vermeer and always has shaft and roller trouble and the bearings never last. I kept my old Vermeer 605 Super J that had over 50,000+ bales through it, and we go with 2 balers now, my wife runs the new super M and I run the old super J, alot of days we make over 500 bales and could do more if had more hay ready. A 90 hp tractor will run the Super M, my uncle has one and pulls it with a JD 4020 and they are about 90 hp. I run a JD 4450 on mine and that makes a good combination. Terry

90 horse may not have enough weight. id get something bigger unless your land is all flat.
