Subject: How to get rid of groundhogs

Rugby Ontario Canada
I am wondering how to get rid of ground hogs that are around buildings and the bunker silos without having to shoot them. Can't seem to get close enough to shoot them was wondering if I put out some corn and anti freeze would it kill them or is there some other mix I should use on them. There are no cats or dogs around so no fear of killing them with what I put down to kill them . Thanks for any help

If you have them and can stand it, don't kill the coyotes. Ever since our coyote population wqs reestablished, the groundhog problem has gone to be almost nonexistent.
I think You would have better luck using doctored turnips or some other green vegetable or maybe something sweet like baby pig pellets and Golden Malrin if you want to poison them.
Conibear traps work real well if you can find them. On the occasional few groundhogs that I have had, the traps work well for me.
Way back when we were overrun with them, I found out that once they are scared into their holes, exactly 1/2 hour later almost without exception, they would pop their heads back out and then 222 to the rescue ! I would sit in a folding lawn chair and wait.

Traps probably your best bet, get the conibear type, they work 24 hours a day.Mkae sure to get the right size. The small ones won't do the job and the beaver size is just to large and tough to set. You don't need the double spring type, they can be tough to set with cold fingers. You may want to buy the trap setter while your doing it.

Hee Hee! Now is that your preferred method?

As sergeant Schultz would say, "I see nothing"

I accidentally spilled some treated seedcorn last year-shortly after that all around my shed disappeared. Could have been coyotes as we have a lot of them but I have never seen one that close to the shed. Cat may have got one or two but I don't think she usually ventures out that far and I have never seen any dead ones.

I have not done this with ground hogs, but I have used this with moles and ground squirrels.
1. Take an old rag and soak it in bleach and then put it into the animals hole. However, not to far inside.
2. Next pour regurlar household ammonia on the rag. This will produce a nice cloud of clorine gas which is very poisionous, so stay upwind.
3. Quickly take a shovel and cover the hole with dirt. This will force the clorine gas down the hole and hopefully where the groundhog has setup home. If the hole is angled fairly flat, I have occasionally used the handle of the shovel or a stick to poke the smoking rag inside a bit further before covering the hole with dirt.

The two great things about this trick are that it is cheap and you don't have to worry about any domestic farm animals getting into the bait, poison, or trap etc.
