Subject: Dozer question IH TD15

SE Nebraska
I currently have 3T D7 cable dozer for the last 25 years so remember I am pretty easy to please. I would just like to have a cab (kind of a wimp on a windy November day) and a little newer machine. Would a 1971 TD15B fill the bill. I do my own mechanic work. What does it weigh compared to the D7? How does it shift, is it a power shift? What engine did they have and was it the same as an ag tractor? I think that the later ones had a DT466. I don't put many hours on it. Mostly leveling dirt behind the excavator. But if I had a cab I am sure that it would get a lot more use.

Had a TD15C, sure it had a 407 in it. Had a torque convertor, with 2 speed power shift. Had a High-low range selector that had to shifted manually, dead stop. In the low range(used 90% of the time,) the power shift was first and 3rd. Worked perfect, push out tree, shift to high(3rd) move dirt or tree and then had the fast reverse. For you pushing and backfilling loose dirt behind excavator, the high range works great. In high range, the low is 2nd and high is 4th. Most of our operators used the low range, but I liked the high range, pushed most of dirt in low, backed up fast in 4th. Most newer dozers have a 3 or four speed power shift. Our 450G has this. That TD15 would sure push more than a 450. Bottom line was one of the best dozers we ever had, fuel economy was good. Parts are now had to find though. Internationl boys can tell what motors swap out with bell housing. In dozers it's easier to repower, only have to match bell. Email if want more info on TD15.

You don't want a 15B. Do yourself a favor and get a 15C. The B's had the same engine as the IH 806 tractor. The C's have a 466, much better. Parts are much more available for the C's and they made alot of improvements to them. We have had a 15C for 20 years, like any dozer, they are expensive to maintain, but much cheaper than a Cat.

Ours might have been a B, it didn't have the 466. When did the C's come out kwvnhfr1?

I think the C's came out in about 73. Ours is a 74. Around 78 they started using the inline injection pump which is better than the rotary that ours has (same style as 1066). The B's had a shorter track and was not balanced as well as the C's. Most of the C's came with the semi U blade which is much better than the straight blade. Both are 2 speed power shift with hi-low range. We rented a B for a year before buying our C. We gave $25,000 for ours with all new undercarriage and trans. And new pins and bushings in the blade, new cutting edge, new paint. It has a open ROPS with sweeps, 20" pads (don't get any narrower) They can be bought for less than $10,000 but those can be a money pit. I spent close to $8000 rebuilding the undercarriage 2 yrs. ago using a new salt chain and used idlers, rollers, and sprockets. I think that if I put $100 in a jar every time I started the engine, I might have enough to keep it in good shape.

Ours was a B then, but I didn't think it had shorter track than the C. Had the newer blade, bottom line, was one of the best dozers for the money we had in it. Was later traded for a TD-8G, downsized operation, and smaller dozers less to maintain. Big dozers are fun to run, but people don't like to pay for them in our area, they would rather pay less per hour and it takes twice as long. Got rid of lowboy and used dump truck and trailer.

I had a TD 15B for two years back in 1975. I only had it for two years and in that time I went through 2 finals drives and the power shift was getting weak when I traded it off. It was under power for what I wanted to do with it. Not a good dozer in heavy timber in my opinion, might be alright if you just shove dirt with it.
